FordsnFishin Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 Has anyone found an actually decent set of spool pin removers? I've broken 2 now and find it quite annoying. Can't do a simple job without a set. Some manufacturers press those pins in so tight one would think they didn't want you to remove it. ??? Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted January 20, 2020 Super User Posted January 20, 2020 The only one I ever thought much of was the little blue hand vise sold by Jun Sonoda at Japantackle. Don't get me wrong; it's not perfect. It's just the best I found. If I use one of those pliers-types, I'm guaranteed to mess that pin up. I've taken to sending reels in to the factory lately, just because I'm lazy and want to avoid frustration. Some people fabricate their own tools. Maybe you have that talent. I don't. jj 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 I use Boca pliers to press the pin flush then push it out with the hedgehog tool. Sometimes they are just too tight. 1 1 Quote

Using both would have their advantages, just have to buy both now...ughhh Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 20, 2020 Posted January 20, 2020 How many reels are you doing? You can clean the spool mounted one without removing it. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 21, 2020 Super User Posted January 21, 2020 Get the boca pliers for 40$. Been using them for years without an issue. Not a fan of the small, twist tool. 1 1 Quote
drew4779 Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 I use the boca pliers as well. I've never broke the pliers, but did break the pin on an old pflueger trion. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted January 21, 2020 Super User Posted January 21, 2020 Are you sure you do the right way? Mine come with 2 side little pin use only when push through hole, use bigger side at beginning to make it flush to hole first. 1 hour ago, FordsnFishin said: Thanks, the hedgehog tool is what I've been using. I service 10-15 of my own reels, and end up doing around 10-15 of my friends/ family every year. 3 hours ago, Bass_Fishing_Socal said: Are you sure you do the right way? redmeansdistortion Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Get the Reel Speed pliers from Dawn at Smooth Drag. I have a set and I'll be buried with them. http://www.smoothdrag.com/Pliers.html Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted January 21, 2020 Super User Posted January 21, 2020 Hedgehog has worked hundreds times for me. Quote
mc6524 Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 I put a drop of reel oil on the top of the pin an then use the Bocca bearing pliers and push it through. It makes it easier to pull out with a needle nose or pliers once I have the pin pushed through. Quote

So long as the tool is centered and the threads lubed it shouldnt have much of an issue unless pins are bent or corroded. Quote
