bowtech_182 Posted July 2, 2007 Posted July 2, 2007 I bought this boat and trailer today from a coworker for $125. It is a 1959 model and 14' long 55" wide. Now the fun part of stripping the paint, making repairs, building seats, deck and floor. Then it is alodine, prime and paint. More pictures to follow. Andy Quote
Super User cart7t Posted July 2, 2007 Super User Posted July 2, 2007 Yikes! I was 2 years old when that thing was made. Good luck! Quote
fishingfourfun Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Nice boat! I wasn't even a gleam in my daddy's eye when the boat was made. ;D Quote
kms399 Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 as long as it doesn't leak I see nothing wrong with it whatsoever. my boat was it pretty rough shape when I bought it now it is a duck killin, fishin machine. It is nice to see someone not afraid to do a little work to get what they want. Please post some pics when you are done. congratulations on your new boat. remember fish don't care what kind of boat you are in, just what color senko you are using Quote
bowtech_182 Posted July 3, 2007 Author Posted July 3, 2007 It is in suprisingly good shape for its age. I found a little corrosion and a few cracks coming from rivet holes, but I am an aviation sheetmetal mechanic so I am very proficient in fixing aluminum. I have to get a plug and a paddle tomorrow and I am going on the maiden voyage to see how it floats or sinks and to check the stability of it for decking. Andy Quote
Low_Budget_Hooker Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 If that's a lone star, they are collectible. PM hachiesting06, he did a beautiful restore job on one right down to duplicating the original 50's logo. Decking should be kept on the floors with these boats. If anything, 1/2 a bow deck w/pedestal. DO not deck the whole thing from the seats up, very unstable. Floors are ok to deck though. Good luck with her. We may have to start an "antique Low budget boating" club, mine is a '64 Quote
SteveFinMD Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Congrats on the good deal. I am looking forward to following your project. Good luck with her. Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Sweet! Take your time and enjoy the process. Projects like these are why I love jon boats. Good luck and keep us posted. Quote
bowtech_182 Posted July 3, 2007 Author Posted July 3, 2007 under the 8 coats of paint I learned that the boat is a Crestliner and the title says 1956 not 1959 like I thought. I plan on a 6ft deck on the bow 12" off the floor to gain some storage and floors the rest of the way with a bench or two. Stripping paint is now on my three least favorite things to do I have done about a 1'x4' patch so far. Andy Quote
razyrsharpe Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 i have one that is a similar body style that i am trying to restore. but my lack of knowledge is making me him-and-haw (procrastinate for you that don't speak redneck) about getting it done. can be an intimidating task for those with little know how. good luck with yours and i hope you will keep us posted on your results. JayDub Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Awwww.... : LBH remembered me and my boat. I'm touched. lol Quote

Andy Some guys would want you to restore it to original condition. Personally, I would make it how you want it, but don't do anything permanent, so when you go to sell it, you gut it and restore it, as opposed to modernizing it. In 40 years, if I ever decide to sell the Lund fish n ski we are restoring, I will remove everything, and make it as original as possible. Quote
bowtech_182 Posted July 8, 2007 Author Posted July 8, 2007 I now have 99% of the paint off and am going to be alodining, filling dents and I have one repair to do where I blended through the hull while I was removing some bad exfo corrosion. I also have to figure out how to fix one of the gunwales. It is cracked and bent which is putting an oilcan in the side of the boat. I really need to cut about 18" out of the middle of it and put an insertion in. Does anyone know where I can get extrusion like you would use on a gunwale? Quote
wickyman Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 That is a beautiful boat! I want to see it when you get it done! PM me the finished product. I just got a free kayak, and I am in the same boat as you, no pun intended! lol I have to basically restore the wood, and repaint the canvas. Should be just as fun to restore! I saved myself 1200 bucks, and was lucky enough to have friends whom own 10 kayaks! I just wish that it was simpler to do, like an aluminum boat, but it will be in the water, soon, all the same! bowtech_182 Posted July 28, 2007 Author Posted July 28, 2007 It is now primed and I am trying to get the floor and seats done. I still need to make a top for the bow, cut out the front floor and back wall of the front floor which Right now it is just an OSB template. I also need to add all of the aluminum subfloor and stiffeners, etc. I added some storage for 3600 boxes under the front seat. I am more than welcome to comments or seggestions. Quote
bowtech_182 Posted September 3, 2007 Author Posted September 3, 2007 I took it out fishing today with a borrowed transom trolling motor. The boat is alot more stable that I thought. i was even able to stand and fish on the elevated locker in the front. Quote
