jbo225 Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I have plenty of MH and Heavy fast action rods but wanting something different to use. I'm looking to get a medium power rod but what action Fast or moderate fast want to use this rod for lighter applications throwing T rigs, spinner, hollowbelly swim, shallow cranks etc. Like I said just for lighter applications stuff Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted January 15, 2020 Super User Posted January 15, 2020 I use MF nearly as much as MHF 1 Quote
Tizi Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 I have a few rods that meet your criteria that I really like: Daiwa Tatula TTU701MRB, this a 7' medium power rod with regular action (not fast) Carbon Lite 2.0 JCT70MTF, this is a 7' medium power rod with fast action I also have a glass rod with medium action: Daiwa Tatula TTU701MRB-G, this is a 7' medium power rod with regular action (not fast) All three are great for throwing lighter lures. I can cast #9 Rapala a pretty good distance with any of the rods mentioned above. Quote
jbo225 Posted January 15, 2020 Author Posted January 15, 2020 What is someone going to use a moderate fast for? Quote

T rig should be fast action. I would say the same. A T-rig rod for me lives in a different world from crankbaits. I have a Mod-Fast crankbait rod and it's ok for cranks but prefer a Mod. action. For T-Rigged plastic, I like either a fast or x-fast depending on what soft plastic it is. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted January 15, 2020 Super User Posted January 15, 2020 I have to agree with what others are saying. My main crankbait rod is a Moderate, T-Rigs go on a Fast. Quote
kayaking_kev Posted January 15, 2020 Posted January 15, 2020 A lot of people say the Dobyns 703c is like a Medium, and I will throw T-rigs and Shallow Cranks on mine and it's rated Fast Action. Right now I'm mainly using it as a jerkbait rod, but I've thrown squarebills on it and you can feel the wiggle with them. It's also a great spinnerbait and chatterbait rod, there really isn't much it can't do. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 16, 2020 Super User Posted January 16, 2020 I think action type is going to depend on the rod. I've not used mine with a T-rig....yet...but I agree with Tizi. I think the Tatula 7' MR would work fine. Especially if using braid. However, I consider its rating of 1/4-3/4 oz. to fit the MH range. Most of my MHF rods are rated either 1/4-3/4 oz. or 1/4-1 oz. Just because a rod is rated 'Fast' doesn't make it suitable for T-rigs. You won't have to look very hard to find a lot of designated crankbait rods with a fast rating. That I don't get. Quote

I would say it’s like a mag medium with a soft tip. I’ve thrown Ned rigs up to 3/8 jigs with larger trailers-killer sensitivity. I took it out today to test different top waters (Spook/walking) vs my medium mod. Walking was easier with the 703 and added 15 plus yards on the cast. I’m going to try the 705 cb for cranks/chatter/top water. I have another medium xf but I’m not sure what to use it for besides jerk/twitch baits. For most 1/4, Ned, ds and spook jr. I prefer my custom mlf inshore rod. It’s a different taper with a Killer backbone but has a mod fast feel with soft tip. Quote
waymont Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 To stay in what range you are looking for I would recommend a Dobyns Champion 702. I just picked one up for small jigs, poppers, small soft swimbaits, jerkbaits. It’s not a soft noodle rod, similar to a 2 power Loomis rod. It’s a nice rod to replace a medium action spinning setup, which is what bought mine for. Quote
deadadrift89 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 I have two Diawa Tatula TTU701MRB Shallow Cranking, Jerkbait, Light Top Water rod. It's 7' Medium/Moderate-Fast(non glass model). Bought my first to use on topwater walking baits- Sammy100, Spook jr. I liked the action so much I got another specifically for throwing KVD 1.5 square bills and lipless cranks. For 1/2oz baits with trebles it's got a perfect action for me, anything much over 1/2 and it feels like its starting to push it. As others said I wouldn't use a modfast action for Trig. FWIW Sportsman Outfitters has them for $99 on sale https://www.sportsmansoutfitters.com/products/daiwa-tatula-bass-rods 1 Quote
mc6524 Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 Ymoderate to slow action rods bend at the top half of the rods. They are usually used for multi hook baits such as crankbaits and top water lures, or other reaction baits such as spinnerbaits, rattlebaits and jerkbaits. Since the action is softer it helps prevent the bait being thrown by the fish. Quote
