Steve Myers Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 Hi, I live in florida and I swim a jig around alot of grass and reeds for big fish. I'm looking for a better rod than the flipping rod I'm using now. Please help me decide. I'll be using straight braid 30#-50#. My buddy has been using the new st. Croix legend glass 7'2" heavy chatterbait rod with good success (he says he can feel the bite better) but I'm no sure what to get, I do like shorter lengths 7'1-7'3 Quote
Dens228 Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 What are you looking to spend. I love my MegaBass Orochi XX Braillist enough to have two of them. One for swim jigs, the other for bottom contact jigs. Quote
Jmoney402 Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 I have a legend tournament bass 7'6" MH-MF 40 Braid that I throw my swim jig on and really like it. Has great feel to it, snaps out of grass well, and solid hook sets with it I have the 7'4" MH-M Legend Glass that I throw 10 ft diving crankbaits and lipless crankbaits on but have never tried throwing jigs or chatter baits on. I have 12 fluro on my legend glass and would not throw swim jigs or chatterbaits on 12# F. In my opinion the st croix rods are too perfect for crankbaits and this keeps me from trying braid with them but I may be off base on that, or just preference. Quote
Finessegenics Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 I have no specific rod to recommend but I don’t think a swim jig is worth throwing on a glass rod. Glass rods are not known for their sensitivity and if you’re gonna be fishing the swim jig through grass, a graphite rod will help differentiate the feeling between a clump of grass or a bite. The glass rods are great for moving baits that don’t usually go through cover or grass. 1 1 Quote
Bandersnatch Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Anything in that 7'3 Heavy range should work well. I say heavy because in the grass I like the back bone to clean my jig and not flex deep into the rod. It also means you can get those big girls heads turned in the right direction otherwise they bury in the grass. No way on glass for grass imo Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted January 13, 2020 Super User Posted January 13, 2020 How much do you wanna spend? I recently got the Megabass Orochi Diablo which I plan on using for swim jigs. Haven't had a chance to use it yet but in hand, this thing is awesome. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted January 13, 2020 Super User Posted January 13, 2020 OP, you didn't mention what weight jigs you will be throwing. Be a good idea to match the rod power to the lure weight. 1 Quote
waymont Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Dobyns Champion 734 or 735 depending on how heavy jigs you want to use. Tatula 7'1" heavy would be sweet too. It would be less money too. 1 Quote
matbellon3 Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 I use a Dobyns 734 but where you have a lot of grass I would even suggest a 5 power. Quote

I use a Fury 735c, I like the backbone for ripping a jig through submerged bushes. 50lb braid is the min. If you don't choose a dobyns - always consider a longer rod with a soft tip for casting distance and keeping fish pinned. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 14, 2020 Super User Posted January 14, 2020 Budget and lure weights determine choice. I picked up some swim jigs, but haven't used them yet. I have several rods to try with them. Megabass Diablo Spec R, ALX Toadface and Deputy are the more expensive rods. An Aetos 7' MHF. Tatula 6'10" MHF, Tatula 7'MHR and Villain 2.0 7' MHF are a few lower cost rods I want to try. So many choices...so little time left. Quote

Eel grass, pepper grass, Kissimmee grass, or hydrilla? You might be able to get away with a glass rod in eel and pepper grass as I use a Mojo glass rod to rip traps through these types of sparse, stringy grass. However, if it is thicker stuff like Kissimmee grass or hydrilla, you’re going to want a MH or possibly a H fast action graphite rod to rip the swim jigs free and get any bass stuck in the cover out. My choice for swim jigs in heavy cover is a SC Avid X MH or if you need something more stout, then a SC Mojo Inshore MH. Quote
NathanDLTH Posted January 17, 2020 Posted January 17, 2020 I'll keep it simple as possible. 1/4-3/8 oz MH, 1/2-3/4oz H. 15-20lb flouro or braid to leader. That's how I roll. Quote
Quarry Man Posted January 19, 2020 Posted January 19, 2020 falcon makes good swim jig specific rods. match your price to the model, and decdide which specific rod you want. I don't live in Florida, so im not a ton of help, but my swim jig rod is the 7'2"mh "swim jig", you might look at the 7'4" h "Hudson" https://shop.falconrods.com/collections/falcon-lowrider-2019/products/falcon-lowrider-casting-rod-74-heavy Quote
