Super User Jig Man Posted January 11, 2020 Super User Posted January 11, 2020 I just got one for my birthday. It is my first dc. I don’t quite know what application would be best. I use a Chronarch 150 for spinner baits, X70s for finesse, Curado 200 E for medium and heavy applications. I am not sure where this fits. You guys who own them, how do you use them? Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 11, 2020 Super User Posted January 11, 2020 I would think with dc it should do it all. The only limiting factor in my eyes would be gear ratio. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted January 11, 2020 Super User Posted January 11, 2020 Perfect for jerkbait, lipless or crankbaits, expecially in windy conditions. Quote
bwjay Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 I'd use it for light-ish baits (or ones with a lot of drag like spinnerbaits and jerkbaits), especially in wind as jbsoonerfan said. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 12, 2020 Author Super User Posted January 12, 2020 How would it work for Arigs? Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 12, 2020 Super User Posted January 12, 2020 I have one and have used it for several applications. I found it worked best for crankbaits. I also liked it for spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and weightless soft plastic. I really didn't find a technique that I didn't like with this reel. It still amazes me at how well it handles those difficult conditions we face out on the water, wind especially. Quote

DanielG Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 I've posted this other places Settings (very different from Shimano instructions) 1. Set the brakes to the line recommendation. 2. Set the tension so that the lure drops a little when you shake the pole and stops when you don't. 3. You have to reset this for each different weight lure. You'll never have a backlash, even into the wind. I find that it works great with 30 lb braided line. Maybe other types too. I haven't tried them. Quote
NathanDLTH Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 That gear ratio will do just about everything you're looking for. Maybe not ideal with frogs, topwater, or jigs/t-rigs, but it will do just about everything. For that reel I'd use it for moving baits, cranks, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and such. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted January 12, 2020 Super User Posted January 12, 2020 I've only got one and I use it for spinner baits. Once I got it adjusted right it works great. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 12, 2020 Author Super User Posted January 12, 2020 I called BP they have some higher gear ratios. When the ice melts off the roads I think I’ll make a trade. Quote
Bass Rutten Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 Considering a dc this spring... Forgive my ignorance but what kind of casting distance improvement could one expect over say a standard curado or is the only benefit backlash prevention? Quote
Derek1 Posted January 12, 2020 Posted January 12, 2020 The distance difference is not mind blowingly further, but it is further. It is pretty effortless though. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 13, 2020 Super User Posted January 13, 2020 Gen purpose - jigs, weighted plastics, traps, jerks, spinner/buzz baits, top props, spooks, poppers. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted January 13, 2020 Author Super User Posted January 13, 2020 I traded for a 7.4. I spooled it up and did some yard casting. Like stated it isn’t a lot longer cast but I set it on the lightest setting and threw a 1/2 oz casting plug. No thumbing and the spool stopped with no backlash or even loose line on the spool. I am impressed! Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 14, 2020 Super User Posted January 14, 2020 I have an older Exsence DC. As long as I keep it on MAX or one of the other 3 positions, I don't need a thumb either. Spool is pretty loose, too. I love reels..................period, but it is nice knowing I don't have to worry about backlashes. I am a pro so I am sure I will backlash it before long. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted January 14, 2020 Super User Posted January 14, 2020 I love my DC'S and they work with anything. I think they shine on baits that tend to be effected more by wind. I don't use them much for jigs Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted January 14, 2020 Super User Posted January 14, 2020 I always wonder what happens to these reels if the microcomputer in them ever goes out. Then what? 1 Quote

As I understand it the chip is on a small disk that comes off when you take it apart. It can be replaced easily. But, it if did ever die I guess it would work like a regular bait casting reel??? I should take mine out sometime and see what it's like, (but it's all ice here right now). But I'd imagine it would be free spinning with no braking. Then again, I think it's fairly simple, no mechanism, basically a chip on a white disk. No battery, the spinning powers it. So, the chance of it's failure is probably equal to or less than a failure of mechanical brakes. 1 Quote

Never had it happen but looked into it when I had a few dc reels. The whole DC unit would need to be replaced, if I remember correctly they were about $60-70 for the I-DC 5 system and $50 for the old I-DC 4 system. On an interesting note on the Scorpion DC a little O-ring is all that keeps water out of the hole on the back of the DC unit (don't know if it is same for the curado though) 1 Quote
