Just wanted to jump in and make my first MN post here.  I recently moved from the DC area (with a house in the NY Finger Lakes area too) to Anoka County, MN.  Been here about 2 months and trying to learn the areas as fisheries.  I live right next to Lake George and got out there a few times, and Coon lake.  Looking to get out and learn, I have both a boat and kayak so if someone needs a fishing buddy let me know!  I am always down to throw some lines.

Welcome to MN. What took you so long to move here?

Lake George for a long time was a hidden gem, like really really good bass fishing up until the local lake association started "treating" the lake for weeds and it all but killed off the great bass bite.

The "ball sack" was epic on George, it was the best spot on the lake for a long time.

Hit up the Rum with your Yak you'll get into some good smallies.

Welcome to the Great White North!

I don't get out much - and when I do it's always on Minnetonka (other end of the 'world' from you) in the canoe for short trips only or shore-fishing for even shorter trips.

I know, really liking it here so far; we are really enjoying it.  LG was surprising and gets a bit manic on the weekends with the boat traffic, but the top water bite has been great the past week or so.  Not sure if I found the "ball sack" yet!  LOL!   I have been having graphing issues with my hummingbird units; I upgraded to a Fortrex and I don't think I have the right cable to contact it so I have been handicapped with finding stuff.  Rum river is right down the street too, not sure where exactly or what section would be good to dip into it, sounds like fun.

It looks to be only an hour from me; which at my NY house was my typical run to one of the bigger lakes, and in DC fishing the Potomac or the upper bay were also an hour, so that is par for the course of what I am used to.

just out from the beach. Long flat in the 7 - 8' depth and then drops off into deeper water.

Pretty much anywhere, you can get into some gnarly **** with a yak.

Thanks!  That mapping is awesome; much better than my lake master charts that are giving me fits right now.

I was already having the best season I've ever had so my last trip on Saturday 10/10/20 simply cemented it.  My friend and I caught 25 bass and 6 pike in about 5 hours on a lake an hour north of the metro.  It was pretty ridiculous.  7 of the bass were 17+ inches including three over 5 pounds.  4 of the pike were over 27 inches too.  We caught all of them on moving lures.  They refused to bite a slower finesse presentation.  The top producing lure was a 3/8 oz white chatterbait, although other lures were also effective.  The water temp was 57 degrees.  My boat is being winterized now and heads to storage next week.  This will not be a season I forget anytime soon.  Its very satisfying to finish the season on such a high note.  Good luck to those that are still out there fishing.

So quiet here...does that mean everyone's boats are winterized?  60's in store for next week.  Plan on getting out.  Anyone still pounding the water?  Wondering if water temps will get back to a spot where it might activate the fish just enough.  Thoughts?

Canoe is put up for the winter - given constraints, I won't have the time needed to take it out. I might go out for some shore fishing here and there - but that'll be it until spring.

Just dropped off the boat last night actually, she's all tucked away in the shed for the winter. I pulled the plug mainly because I don't have a garage big enough to put my boat in over night. The over night temps are what scare me if I'm still using the boat, don't want the water lines to freeze.

Been bank / wading fishing the Sippi now. Mostly mid week to avoid the crowds.

Not sure the the day time temps will re-activate them, the over nights are still low, so highly doubt it'll make a dent it the water temps.

Mine's winterized and in storage as of last weekend.  I don't keep my boat at home in the winter and the storage location has a specific 3-day window that I have to declare and follow to get it in there.  I hope to fix that issue at some point down the road with a house that has a bigger garage.

If I still had my boat I would consider another outing next week.  I might consider muskie fishing instead if the water temps were too cold.

I am trying to fish for smallies in the Mississippi in Monticello. I never waded the river before. Any tips for first time waders? If you fished there before, mind sharing where you access the river and where you walk in the water?
