comesailaway Posted January 5, 2020 Posted January 5, 2020 I had the good folks at BassPro spool fluro onto my open face spinning reel. First time fluro user. I hit the lake and on the first cast I had the biggest birds nest I have ever had. Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong or advice on how to prevent this? Thanks! Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted January 5, 2020 Super User Posted January 5, 2020 1: What test line did you get? I won't spool anything over 10# on my spinners. 2: Are you using a line treatment on it? I use KVD L&L on all my non-braid lines...really helps cut down the tangles. Quote
comesailaway Posted January 5, 2020 Author Posted January 5, 2020 Thank you. It was 10lb. I will pick up some line treatment and try that. Appreciate your response. Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted January 5, 2020 Super User Posted January 5, 2020 Welcome @comesailawayto Bass Resource and the Forums! To answer your question, I’m gonna say the person who helped you by putting line on your reel may have over spooled it, hey it happens. I try to keep the line about 1/8” below the spool lip to prevent this... again, welcome to BR 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted January 5, 2020 Super User Posted January 5, 2020 I wouldn't go over 8lb. I would stick with seguar invisx or tatsu. I personally hate flouro because of management issues . 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted January 5, 2020 Super User Posted January 5, 2020 I agree with it may be overfilled, I leave at least 1/8 inch... a little more might help. KVD line conditioner helps too... With new line, or when my reels haven’t been used in a while, I will also pre-stretch the fluorocarbon. Hook it to a tree and move back approx normal casting distance. Pull the line reasonably tight and hold 1-2 minutes. Reel back in and apply Line conditioner. Don’t have to do this every time but it definitely helps “train” the line. Lastly, if you are new to using fluorocarbon, you can use some electrician’s tape to lessen the “mishaps” until you get better. Again, let out normal casting distance, then go back another 5-10 yards, and put a small piece of the tape on the remaining spool. That way if you do birds nest, it won’t unravel the entire spool and minimizes the picking out process ? 1 Quote
comesailaway Posted January 5, 2020 Author Posted January 5, 2020 Thank you for your suggestions Quote
5by3 Posted January 5, 2020 Posted January 5, 2020 Many brands of flouro are not very spinning reel friendly in my opinion. A few suggestions: 1. check that the reel doesn’t have too much line on the spool 2. apply line conditioner (kvd like and lire works wonders) 3. Try a smaller lb test. Usually I’ll stick with 8lb if 1-3 don’t work, try a higher quality line like invisx or tatsu or go to a braid + fluorocarbon leader instead. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 6, 2020 Global Moderator Posted January 6, 2020 Agree with all that has been said (8lb or less, premium line like tatsu/AbrasX, spool was likely overfilled). Also add that if it's cold outside, line becomes even more difficult to manage so that could be adding to your issues. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 Fluoro is tricky on spinning reels no matter what you do. Braid with a 30ft fluoro leader gives you almost all the properties of straight fluoro with far fewer handling issues. You just need to learn to tie an FG knot to make the best of it. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted January 6, 2020 Super User Posted January 6, 2020 Tn the last..oh 45 years, I have never used any line over 8 lb test, that includes fluro..I don't know what brand of line they spooled for you, but it may have been on that has lots of memory, combined with over spooling, is just asking for trouble. First, I would ditch that line (recycle it) Buy some fluro that was mentioned above in 8 lb test, and spool that up. If your not certain how to do that, youtube has some good instructional videos on how to do it, it's really very easy. With Quality fluro, you really don't need to add any conditioner..On a baitcaster, yes, spinning, no. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted January 6, 2020 Super User Posted January 6, 2020 For spinning reels, fc can for the most part be stiff and wiry and hard to manage of spinning reels. this is why you’ve been told by many here already that they don’t go passed 8#. there are a few fcs out there that are a bit more supple, like invisx but even then, I wouldn’t go passed 8# either. if you can get away with it, step down to 8# (I use 6# for my drop shotting when I feel like buying fc) or even better, 6#. good thing you asked us here first, or you probably would have been disappointed and frustrated with fc not initially know it’s traits before using it. anything in the 10# test realm for fc in general, unless the line is supple, is better suited with casting reels.
