2 person kayak options?

So I’ve been mulling over the idea of getting a 2 person kayak (tandem??) so that me and my boy can go out on the lake etc together and fish.

 

I would get a boat but I have a car so I’ll be sticking with a kayak for right now and it’ll be healthy to do.

 

What brands have you guys liked and that I should look out for?

I would like to be able to put on a small trolling motor to help at times.

For two-person fishing, I think a canoe might be a better bet...depending on how old your son is.

More room for gear, with a simple outrigger assembly it's much more stable, can be further customized for a mean fishing machine.

This is my canoe as it sits currently - I'm doing some more mods to it this winter to make it more second-person friendly. Regular fishing seat - can add a second up front, outrigger stabilizers, rod rack.

at 8 years old you are gonna be tight in any kayak really, even those designed for two people.  I would recommend getting two kayaks, one for you and one for him.  He will learn how to paddle on his own and have fun doing it and it will allow you to fish more.  

If you don't want to get two, then i would also agree that a canoe may be the better option for fishing except maybe the jackson big tuna.

I fish with my nine soon to be ten year old out of my Nucanoe Frontier 12. I also fish with my wife (age not determined) out of it. I have fished with both once as well. Stability is not a problem. It truly works great and is far more stable than any canoe I've been on. It also fishes great solo. It is not a bassboat, so obviously there is limited space and you must watch your backcast, but it has been a blast to fish lakes and rivers with my son in it.

NuCanoe! The second seat slides into gear tracks on the deck. It take two seconds to add the seat or remove it. And the boat it super stable. I’ve seen two grown men on one of them before. The transom is also designed to accept a trolling motor.

I highly recommend the Nucanoe Frontier 12.  You can rig it to fish by yourself and you can add a second seat to go tandem on it.  I take my daughter with me occasionally and it's great.  Probably the most versatile kayak there is.

For 2 people I would be looking at small jon boat or Pelican bass raider.

 

When I go with someone, I am in their boat or my signature boat.  I often fish with other people with individual kayaks.

How much you wanna spend? You could probably host a small circus on a Hobie PA17. And everyone knows a Hobie attracts the biggest fish.

I have a 13.5' kayak and it's not big enough to share with another person if we were both fishing. And he's going to grow. I'd rather ahve 2 kayaks. I understand he's not big enough for his own, but he will be before you know it. I have two kayaks and I'm only one person. The canoe is a better idea, but not really that easy to transport on a car. The NuCanoe is a good suggestion as well.
