Mbirdsley Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 I’m looking at replacing my berkly shock lighting rod and purchasing a new rod for pitching, punching and flipping into heavy sloppy cover. Throwing 1 1/4-1 1/2 oz jigs. I’m looking really hard at the st.croix bass mojo Heavy 7’2 or 7’4 ( I forgot the length off the top of my head) rods. Looking to spend up to 150 bucks. Any other suggestion of rods to look at? I don’t need it right this second and have time to look around. For the moment I’ll be using My quantum accurist pt bait caster ( white one) on the new rod but, May up grade it later. My accurist has a flipping/pitching switch which, I like . What other qualities should a good flipping and pitching reel have? Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted January 4, 2020 Super User Posted January 4, 2020 Bit under that price - Dobyns Fury 765Flip - 7'6", rated up to 2 oz - $119 Bit over that price - Dobyns Sierra 766Flip - 7'6", rated up to 2 oz - $179 2 Quote
Dens228 Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 Tatula Elite is a nice rod. A little over $150 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted January 4, 2020 Super User Posted January 4, 2020 Sounds like you need something rated to 2 oz. I would consider the Dobyns mentioned above, Tatula or this: Genesis II Casting Rod 7'5" Fred's Magic Stick Show Information Taper Line Wt. Lure Wt. Guides Handle Type Handle Length Stock Price Qty Fast 50-70lb Braid 1/2-2oz 9+Tip Genesis II Cast B 16-1/2" In Stock: 5+ $149.99 Read the reviews on Magic Stick, they are excellent. Not a fan of the St. Croixs that size, very heavy cumbersome rods, and tip heavy IMO. Read the specs, or put them on a scale and they weigh 1-2 oz more than other similar rod manufacturers. Quote
RyneB Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 ALX Ikos Hanmer will do exactly what you want it to do. Great rod for the price. Ounce and a 1/2 may be a but on the high side for the rod. But I punch 1 oz with it all day. Even boat flipped a 4.6 with it. Quote
scbassin Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 This is the rod I use. T/W has free shipping. Dobyns Sierra Series Casting Rod 7' Mag Heavy Quote
Super User FishTank Posted January 4, 2020 Super User Posted January 4, 2020 St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'4'' Heavy Fast. You can also find the KVD Tour Rods cheap on ebay. I have the 7'4'' heavy and it's not to bad for the money. Quote

I have played around with that rod and it feels good in my hands. St.croix I think are on the heavier side of the ratings . does it being beefier rods detract from any thing qualities of the rod ? You don’t find it un wieldly or anything ? Quote

Generally, the less expensive "heavy" rods are more of the broomstick that you are describing and the higher quality rods still have the appropriate feel that you want. I'm sure there are exceptions. I don't know anything about the St. Croix, but you said that they run heavy? If you are worried about that you could try a Dobyns as they tend to run softer. I use a 7'6 Powell that's rated to 2oz and I absolutely love it. It's strong as an oak but I can still feel everything on the bottom when I'm dragging something. Plus the length allows me to hurl a light, hollow-body frog a country mile on 65lb braid. Don't be afraid of a "heavy" rod IF you are going to use it appropriately. 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted January 4, 2020 Super User Posted January 4, 2020 Dobyns Fury 805 Heavy Flip and Punch. It's balanced, not tip heavy and has an action that is specifically to address the use of braid. With a bait weight cap of 2.5 ounces it's right where you want to be. Super rod for the money. Quote
Diggy Posted January 5, 2020 Posted January 5, 2020 Powell Endurance Casting Rod 7'3" Mag Medium Heavy 735 CEF- Although this is a “shorter” rod by our Magnum Rod standards, it’s an ideal length for blending both accuracy and distance. Equipped with a strong 5-power rating, this is a tool you can confidently take into the thick stuff and not feel undergunned. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Powell_Endurance_Casting_Rods/descpage-PER.html on sale for 104.99 I have a couple and love them, but the weights listed are about 1/2oz or so off when I weighed the rods on my scale. I think there are a lot of high quality, powerful rods like the Powell mentioned above, or other 7 1/2 foot Heavy power rods like Phenix, Daiwa, ALX that weigh 3.5 to 4 ounces. As a comparison, the St. Croix Mojo 7’4” Heavy weighs in at a hefty 5.3 ounces. On a long day on the water that is a lot of extra work and quite fatiguing. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted January 5, 2020 Super User Posted January 5, 2020 Kastking Speed Demon Pro 7'3 HF paired with the 9.3:1 Speed Demon reel is what I use. Retired and little more frugal with money, very impressed. 1 Quote
