Super User clayton86 Posted January 1, 2020 Super User Posted January 1, 2020 Anyone ever had this done? I’m going next week for an appointment to see if I qualify for it or what ever. I’ve been wearing glasses/contacts for a little over 20 years now and it’s becoming such a hassle. hopefully I can get the lasik done and be good to go. Little nervous about it but it is what it is I mean what’s some lasers to the eye to not have to wear contacts anymore lol. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted January 1, 2020 Posted January 1, 2020 I'm 52 and had it done about 10 years ago to correct astigmatism and short sightedness. I think it's fairly important that your eyes are fairly stable and not changing prescription regularly. My long sight is still good post procedure, but like most people my age, my close vision is now getting worse, so I need reading glasses. Very pleased with mine overall. Make sure the person doing the procedure has a good reputation and be prepared to pay more for their experience. I wouldn't shop on price for something like that 1 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted January 1, 2020 Author Super User Posted January 1, 2020 Yeah I knew already my prescription needed to be steady which it has been. Being 33 I don’t expect it to change anytime soon to be a issue. The place I’m using says right on their site they won’t be the cheapest if that’s what looking for and shouldn’t be when it comes to vision. They have a good reputation from all I’ve looked up and researched. Been wanting to do it for years but funds were always a issue before I can afford it now and don’t have to go the cheap route so gonna pull the trigger and have it done if the screening appointment next week goes well. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 2, 2020 Global Moderator Posted January 2, 2020 My dad had it done several years ago and had similar results as Tim. He loves not needed contacts or glasses for most things, but he needs readers for close up stuff. I've considered it as well. My eyes have been stable for a few years now and especially in my line of work, it would be great to not need lenses. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted January 2, 2020 Super User Posted January 2, 2020 My wife who was legally blind had it done in the mid 90's..She was able to stop wearing glasses, cept for reading really small print. To this day she rarely has to use glasses to read. Me, I wasn't so lucky, I have cataracts, well, in one eye now, I had a lens replacement from the same Doc that did my wife's Lasik. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted January 3, 2020 Super User Posted January 3, 2020 No voluntary surgeries for me. Especially on something as precious as my eyes and vision, I don't care how safe it is. Glasses were good enough for my grandpappy, they are good enough for me. 5 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted January 3, 2020 Super User Posted January 3, 2020 I was looking over my new Aetna medical plan and we can get 15% off LASIK at in-network provider. So have you checked your plan, if you have one, for a discount? Quote
moguy1973 Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 I had LASIK back in 2002, and it was the best $5000 I've ever spent. I had worn glasses or contacts since 4th grade (1982) and opening my eyes after the surgery without wearing glasses or contacts and being able to read the clock across the room was amazing. I only had a few issues with the LASIK. One was in dim light, such as around dusk when I was driving or in dimly lit rooms things would get blurry. It would only last for a few moments at dusk and once it was dark enough it would clear up, or in dim rooms I would just deal with it. Wasn't bad at all though. The other issue was I have a slight astigmatism in my right eye, so it has never really been as perfect as my left eye, so if I have to look out of just my right eye everything isn't completely clear, but again, tolerable. I think they tested my eyes after the procedure and I was 18/20 in my left eye and 25/20 in my right. It's much cheaper now than what I paid 18 years ago and a lot of insurance plans give a discount. I don't think I've been to the eye doctor in 15 years to have my vision checked. That being said.... Over the past year and a half my reading vision (i.e. old eyes) has set in and I have to resort to cheap dollar store cheater glasses, but alas, it is what happens when time goes by. My distance vision is still near what it was when I had the procedure done. 1 Quote

Pretty much same story as me. I had it done 9-10 years ago. I dont need cheaters yet but its probably coming soon. Quote
Super User gim Posted January 8, 2020 Super User Posted January 8, 2020 I had it done in 2006 when it was still a relatively new and expensive technology. It’s been refined better now with lower risk and it costs less too. I wore contacts for 13 years before that and eye glasses for 6 months before the contacts. Hated wedging those contacts into my eyes every day and hated wearing glasses even more. The only side effect I have from it is perfect vision all the time without the use of any corrective lenses. If I ever have to go back for an enhancement, it’s free because I have a lifetime acuity warranty. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 10, 2020 Author Super User Posted February 10, 2020 Well I had it done Thursday was pretty quick and painless like expected. My vision now is great doing the drops every 1-2hrs is kinda annoying but worth it. My left eye is the one that bothers me the most always feeling like I got something in it but they say that’s normal and will pass. It feels like when I wore contacts and was tired and needed to take them out Except there’s no contacts to take out so I just take a nap or go to bed. 1 Quote
moguy1973 Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 Nice, you'll love it after the irritation goes away. 1 Quote
Michigander Posted February 10, 2020 Posted February 10, 2020 I had it done around 2006 or 2007 and it was worth it. My vision has degraded a bit since then but I still don't need glasses whereas I did back then. The procedure is pretty painless, though it sounds like a bug zapper is going off and it smells like they are flicking bits of ham onto said bug zapper. Thankfully the Valium they give you beforehand makes you feel totally cool with the whole thing. Quote

The Valium did help to. The irritation is getting better already the first day I was regretting the surgery because it was so irritated I hated it but after sleeping that whole first day the next morning was way better. When I’m out at night coyote hunting they don’t bother me at all in teen temps my eyes aren't irritated one bit. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted February 12, 2020 Super User Posted February 12, 2020 That first good night of sleep makes it feel like almost nothing happened. Except when you wake up you have perfect vision without lenses. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted February 12, 2020 Author Super User Posted February 12, 2020 Yeah my follow up appointment yesterday my left eye is better than perfect or how ever they put it and my right is where is should be but said it should get better just to keep up with the drops. It’s crazy to me anyways my left eye is the one that’s been bothering the most with discomfort the right is like nothing ever even happened it hasn’t been dry feeling or any discomfort at all this whole time. Maybe that’s why the left eye is seeing better then the right I don’t know all I know is it’s awesome not needed lenses Quote
Junger Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 I had PRK done since I was borderline for my cornea thickness. Since the healing was a lot longer than LASIK, I did eyedrops (Refresh Advanced) for almost 8 months. Just keep up the eyedrops, and try not to abraise the healing skin over your cornea. Quote
