Andy Montgomery has definitely shined with the MLF TV show. He really comes off as having a good ole boy personality and he does really well with the format. My favorite line of his went something like this...

I am not a very good looking man so I use my sexy voice to attract the women...

Shaw Grigsby appears to be someone I would love to spend time with at a BBQ. Every fish he catches always seems to be the first one he ever caught. If you notice, alot of guys will catch release and get back at it. Not so with him and actually also Gary Klein,  where they stop, admire the fish, tell ya how they caught it, seem to be still be tickled to death that they landed the fish, and then finally go at it again.

These few examples are really a big reasons I got into the MLF format. It seems to have given me more time to see what they are doing, and get to know the anglers.

Maybe it's because Shaw and Gary are a little bit older and they are just happy to still be out there doing what they love for a living. Sometimes being appreciative of what life has given someone will show by their attitudes and I think both of these guys are examples of that.

I spoke with shaw on the phone once. I had a guide trip and the clients were hunting buddies with him so I did my best shaw impression while driving the truck ("catchin' big ole piiiiiigs"). They all started dying laughing, called him, and said "hey shaw, there's a kid up here in TN that does a better shaw grigsby than you do!" and promptly shoved the phone up to my face and told me to do the impression again. Luckily I nailed it and shaw laughed!

Thats a cool story to have!!

I have the quantum commercial on my ipod, I play it before I make my first cast.

Just puts me in the right frame of mind ...

It may also dramatically increase the use of the term "Non-Scoreable Bass".

I would say those two changes are just as much about the fans as the anglers, if not more so.

I agree it is likely for the fans (and a few of the bigger bass specialists) but I think it really hurts the anglers from being able to dial in a strategy. After a year ....most of them have now figured out what they need to do for the 12" fish and every fish counts format. Now they change it to 2lb or ? . Do you leave all of the "little" fish baits at home, and replace them with jigs? Will it take dialing in more specific structure to fish? Seems as if they may need to dial in an entire new strategy. From a competitor standpoint .... I would have preferred for them to set a limit number of fish ... say 15 or 20 depending on the fishery, then the small end of the fish size, would take care of itself. You could then set a strategy that is the same for every tourney .... catch your 15 or 20, then go fish for larger fish, or just fish for larger fish in general, and hope you get the limit number. The excitement from scoretracker would still remain to appease the TV producers and their target audience, and the new "heavy hitter" and "jump to the finals with heavy 2 day sack" rules would still work.

Strategy is based on the game being played.

BPT is a different game than BASS

Just like NASCAR and INDY are 2 different games but can be lumped under "racing"

I like that it is new and different because it changes the strategies that were used.

Scoretracker is the big game changer IMO.

Swindle(when fishing BASS) said sometimes he would get a couple good bites on a jig and then he'd toss that jig into every bush into the lake, knowing he could get a good bag by the end of the day.

But scoretracker just let you know some dropped 20 lbs in one spot catching 15 fish.

How confident are you in grinding them out now? Still want to stick to the same strategy?

Strategies still come into play, just not the same exact ones used in the 5 biggest tourneys

Evers is not a nice dude! Watch the live BPT footage. He's a dink to his officials and he complains a lot too about other people fishing when they are having events.  Marty Stone classifies him as an "intense competitor" which is code for jerkface.

I have not watched the live footage yet ... I'll need to check it out versus the recorded programming . As for Brent Ehrler's "flat bill" cap - the younger kids like it for the style aspect I suppose (it's all good ) .

LOL!!! Ehrler is 43 though, time to lose the flat bill.

Wait until Rick Clunn , Tommy Biffle and Larry Nixon start rocking the "flat bill" caps - it could happen (LOL !!)

The flat bill is goofy but I rock one from time to time. The sun blockage is way better than the normal curve. The less sunblock I have to wear, the better, haha.

An aside to this topic, I just read that Jason Christie has signed up for all 8 BASS Opens for 2020.  From outward appearances, it looks like rather than cough up $50,000 to just leave BPT, he has decided to try to qualify for the Elites and/or Classic and then leave when his BPT contract is up.  Tough on the family, but I believe Christie did that before (fished two tours simultaneously) the first time he qualified for the 2013 Elite season.

Trivia question - All first time Elite anglers were considered rookies in 2013.  Who won the 2013 ROY on the Elite Series, besting Jason Christie down the stretch?

Shaw is the real deal.

I drew him as a boater in my first Redman tournament on the Kissimmee chain in 1985, a year after he won $100K on Kissimmee which was the largest purse at the time. A cold front had just gone through and it was in the upper 30’s and blowing. You know what that will do to Florida bass. We ran all the way to Tiger cove in Kissimmee to a huge pad field that he had found some fish in practice. It was a small pocket in the middle of it and we flipped it for hours.  I managed to catch most of the fish that day fishing behind Shaw but I think it was because I would flip in a spot after him and by then they were ready to bite. With a few hours left, he said I had a good shot at winning this thing and proceeded to run and gun and hit spots he thought might get me a fish or two to help me win. I didn’t win but with his help did finish 11 out of 285 and took my first check.

I would run into Shaw a couple times over the years after that and he would still remember me. Great guy for sure.

I listened to Ike talk about the new rule change and he said he's not a fan of it.  I'm all about strategies when it comes to competitions so that's one of the things I love the most about the MLF format.

Just watched the second day of the 2019 Classic, Ott weighed in 5 fish for 10 lb 5 oz, now I see why chasing 5 giants is so exciting. Hahaha

If the 2 lb limit was in effect, he might not have even got to weigh 5 in.

But I understand what you are saying about showing the different techniques. Ott, MDJ, Wheeler, Zaldain, Justin Lucas, all throwing a lipless, bladed jig or crankbait. So much different than what we see on the BPT.

Just messing with you guys, don't get upset.

We all know Ike can catch the big ones too though.  You don't win the Bassmaster's by catching small fish.  I saw that G-man and Palaniuk struggled in the open yesterday.  Regardless of what format you're fishing, it's a challenge.

Yeah, I know.

I forgot to use the sarcasm font.

Ike is very good and has had a very successful career.

He is also known for over dramatizing his fish catches and quite a few times he exaggerates the size of his fish until it hits the boat

One strategy is to hear on scoretracker who is catching them and then proceed to try and find out where that person is fishing. I like both formats, I just prefer one over the other.

And when Takahiro finds you, he might get in the boat with you and ask to borrow a lure. :)
