Looking to upgrade my deep cranking reel.   Looking to spend under $250.    Most of my reels are Shimano or diawa but not ruling out any brands.   Been eyeing the curado 150 dc and the tatula elite.   I also saw the bantam on a Japanese website for $265!     Looking for casting distance and limited backlash.   What are you guys using???

I like the Curado DC for cranks.  It's smooth, casts far, and I have had no issues with anything.

One other choice would be the Abu Garcia Winch.  It's just a powerhouse for deep cranks.

I have been using a Daiwa Tatula SV for cranks. It casts them well without backlashing, but does not cast them nearly as far as some other reels can which is its downsize. I have no experience with Shimano Curado DC but the regular Curados cast pretty far!

I also have a Pflueger Patriarch that I've been using for topwaters that I may swap out with the SV next year. The nice thing about that is that it's a dual brake, so you can really tweak it to your liking. Magnets will slow the reel more when the speed is slow and centrifugal brakes slow it more when it's fast, so by keeping them both low you can slow the spool all around -- and of course tweak it to what you don't normally do well with your thumb.

Lots of good options. I'll add the Lews BB1, BB1 pro, and the tournament MB in 5.6:1 (TS1SMB on sale for $80 on Tacklewarehouse). Or step up to the wide spool superduty for real big cranks. I was eyeing the abu winch but found the Tourney MB on sale instead.

The Abu Winch is a powerful cranking reel but the huge spool capacity (200 yards of 10 lb fluorocarbon) hurts distance casting a bit. IMO

I haven't had an issue with casting distance but I use 12lb Suneline Super Natural or 12lb Seaguar Invizx both have a smaller diameter than most other lines at the same test.  I would agree that 10lb maybe an issue with both the lines I use but I have yet to use them.

The Calcutta mentioned above would also be awesome.

Shimano Tranx is the low profile Calcutta.

If you are deep cranking you want the reel A.J. or WRB mentioned.

If you want a Daiwa you want a HD Lexa in 300 size.

When I pickup another cranking reel it'll definitely be a Tranx 200 over another Winch.

Any big crankbait will be heavy enough to bomb it even with a big spool.

It cast ok but every standard capacity reel I own will out cast it with the same lure. My Curado 70 and Revo ALX easily out cast the Winch. All that line capacity isn't needed for my cranking style as I spool with 10 - 12 lb and I can't come close to a 100 yard cast(half the capacity).

I have a match pair of Lews BB1's and have been happy with them.  That's for deep cranks that have significant resistance.

Same here, get the 5.1:1, I still have 2 old BB1's still cranking!!

Yup.  That's where it all started.  I still have 5 BB1N's, two with the anti reverse switch on the top.  I screwed up and sold the two Shimano made Lews back in 1979.  They were the deal in the day with three bearings. They still cast great.☺️

Tatula 150P 5:5:1 ratio , sportsman outfitters has them for $109.

Aluminum frame and side plate ,gear side. That's what I use.
