Super User Oregon Native Posted December 22, 2019 Super User Posted December 22, 2019 Love fishing the ol jerkbaits......but....do you all catch them lets say after ten during the winter much. Seems to me or maybe it's where I fish but it's an awesome morning bait but then it just dies....so I move on to other stuff. Was reading all your posts and this thought came up....thanks 2 Quote
TriStateBassin106 Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Honestly, in the winter... I would try to fish from 11 AM to at least 3 PM, before the waters here in NY froze over the bite was hot during that time slot in Early December. 2 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted December 22, 2019 Author Super User Posted December 22, 2019 I do....I did....and it's pooh Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted December 22, 2019 Super User Posted December 22, 2019 Considering I never hit the lakes around here until at least Noon, every bass I catch on jerkbaits comes later in the day - lol ? 1 Quote
Joe S Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 My experience is that when the sun gets up (even in winter) the fish are less likely to be preditory unless you fish along the edge of a weedbed where they can take cover hide and ambush. Once the sun is up, I will usually switch to a jig and bounce slowly off the bottom or a drop shot and wiggle it in front of their nose. To that...i have had luck during sun-up in the spring when they are warming up from winter and feeding like crazy. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 24, 2019 Global Moderator Posted December 24, 2019 I normally have a good morning bite, then it slows down around lunch and picks back up in the afternoon. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted December 24, 2019 Super User Posted December 24, 2019 Yep, and as you know, a pattern may last all day or an hour and you have to change your presentation or technique. Part of those little green monsters' harassment policy. I recall a story I heard from a pro (forgot which one) where his nonboater did not fish after blast off and actually went to sleep in his seat. He awoke around noon, ate his lunch, and then told the boater where he wanted to go for 2 PM. So at 2 PM the boater shows up at this one location on the lake and the nonboater stands up, stretches, and casts out. After five casts he has five beauties in the live well. For some unknown reason, the bass accumulate at this one place on the lake at 2 PM each day and the nonboater knew about it and had fished it before. Go figure. 2 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted December 26, 2019 Super User Posted December 26, 2019 Well up here in MA, around 3pm seems to be the optimal time to fish most reaction and moving lures before our lakes freeze. 1 Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Caught this chunker around 2:30 PM on Christmas Day on a wind blown dam with a jerkbait. 2 Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted December 27, 2019 Super User Posted December 27, 2019 I’m not a jerkbait expert, but I often do better for big fish between 11-2 in the winter for some reason. In the summer I’m rarely still on the water after 11... I tend to think that if the bass are feeding they will generally bite whatever you are throwing that looks like a good Food source to them, no matter what time of day it is. I just say go whenever you can, if you don’t have a line in the water you definitely won’t catch any... 1 Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted December 28, 2019 Author Super User Posted December 28, 2019 Fished with son a bit yesterday....was so beautiful. Birds were working a bit so fished the area and he got a striper about 20 pounds that kicked his butt...was awesome. I tried a spoon and got a couple bass and snagged a very strong carp. The jerkbait….once again one fish. It's all good...it's gotta click some time...right! 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted December 28, 2019 Super User Posted December 28, 2019 I went this morning and used the jerkbait mostly for the first 2 hours. Didn’t get 1 fish on it, did have one follow it to the boat. 1 Quote
