Happybeerbuzz Posted December 26, 2019 Posted December 26, 2019 I launched my boat this year and forgot to put the plug in. The run to fetch my truck and trailer was the fastest I have moved in a decade or more. 1 Quote

On 12/22/2019 at 9:40 AM, Glenn said: I never use leaders. Add me to this list in not believing in them. I have been tinkering again over the last year with them and still can't see a difference in catch rate. I know folks swear it makes a difference, but I think it is just a confidence thing. Honestly the line is the least unnatural part of a rig. Think of the weight and hook with plastics and multiple trebles on a crank, to me those are going to be seen by the fish way before the line is. The only time it might have gotten me and extra fish was landing a 30+ pike on a crank. I am guessing the fireline would have been cut, while the flouro was abraded, but held. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 27, 2019 Super User Posted December 27, 2019 There's plenty of reasons, beyond getting bites, to use leaders, but that's for another thread. I prefer not to use them, if possible, but I can tell you many of the arguments against using them due to extra knots or weakening line causing break offs are bunk. My salmon and steelhead terminal rig has no less than FIVE knots. Break offs generally occur in the line itself, or caused by user error, not letting the fish take line when needed. Two more confessions: I rarely, if ever wet my line with saliva anymore. With the lines I use, it seems unnecessary. I used a poop jig this past season. I did catch fish. Mostly yellow perch and dink bass, but it worked, and was fun on a light spinning rig. 1 Quote

Super User Cgolf Posted December 27, 2019 Super User Posted December 27, 2019 As for my confessions -After being a cheerleader for and using the Ned rig a ton the last few years, I probably tossed it less than 5% of the time this year. Always found other things that worked I guess as this was one of my better fishing years. -Zman baits have fallen out of my lineup. Using sliders with plastics, I cut off and retie and keep the baits in a bin on deck to be reused later. The obvious problem with Zman is they need to be stored seperate and it just got to be too much of a pain. -I still value my Ugly Stick spinning rod for jerkbait and spybait fishing. It also makes a great river rod with plastics. There is something about the action of the rod that just works for me with these presentations. - With the sliders I tend to use a snap, I believe there are performance benefits, that I of course realized later after the initial laziness. Have compared to direct tie and doesn't impact #of hits. In 15 plus years can only remember 1 snap failure. Quote

I shoot left handed. I'm pretty good at doing both of those things and they're the only things I do seamlessly with my left hand. I'm a righty. My mother is a lefty. My guess is when she and dad split, I got sent home with BB guns and fishing rods and reels and she ended up showing me how she used them. I'm the opposite. I'm left handed, and can't even pick my nose right handed. But I use right handed casting reels. I also change my spinning reels to crank with the right hand. I'm the only lefty in my family. I guess I just grew up cranking with my right hand and got used to it. Quote

I do like to manage the pole with my good hand so I pole with the left and crank with the right. It would seem that the pole is the thing that you want to work. The crank is just a hand movement. Found lure hoarder here. I've got hundreds of lures that I've found. At one time the box on the left was for lures that were not worth keeping, and the box on the right were ones that I might eventually put new hardware on, but the two boxes have gotten mixed up. I've got hundreds of good lures that I never use. There's no reason to keep all these things but I just can't throw them away. Quote

They do make some single and double bladed colorado bladed spinnerbaits that are productive early and late in the season when they won't chase any other moving bait. ive not really had a problem with the skirts thinning on me as much as the hooks getting rust while doing nothing but sit in my spinnerbait box. There are times on a few of the lakes down here in early spring where there is absolutely no point to throw anything other than a solid chart/split tail zoom double colorado booyah 1 Quote

I usually lose them before I have a problem with rust on the hooks since I fish them a lot early in the year when the water level is very low but I was amazed how quick the skirts thinned -- even fishing them in deeper water. My dual colorado bladed spinnerbaits I currently have are War Eagles and they were quite productive for me late in the fall and I've had them a few seasons now. Quote
