Got one a couple months ago and it's a real beaut. Only problem is in this ridiculous state, it's illegal to carry with me unless I'm hunting or fishing because the blade is more than 4". So I'm gonna get the 103 skinner for daily carrying. Quote
813basstard Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 You have a better chance of catching a 10lber than a gator messing with you. Most Important Tip: However, when approaching a pond/lake with an angled bank, DO NOT walk straight at it. Walk at a 45 degree angle so you can see the shore and what ever is there can see you and move. As stated above, don’t spook them if possible. As far as snakes...yeah they’re there. Wear some boots if your worried but it’s not that big of a deal due to most of those ponds you see the surrounding grass is cut pretty low. You’ll be fine. This ain’t the Amazon 1 Quote

This ain’t the Amazon Wow, the thought of me catching a 10-pounder is absolutely tantalizing!!! In Cincy, a 4-pounder is a big fish, a 10-pounder is practically unheard of...or, so I am told. This is what I should be thinking about, not gators or snakes! Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 You should be worried about Florida Man. His shenanigans often involve felony amounts of drugs, as well as alligators. 4 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted December 19, 2019 Super User Posted December 19, 2019 I am from South Florida and have over 2 decades worth experience fishing in waters with alligators. I also have free dived in waters with alligators and other predators. I can tell you right now that the knifes mentioned in this thread are useless if you are not brave enough to defend yourself against a wild animal that can potentially eat you. It is best to not put yourself in a dangerous situation and if you must fish in a dangerous area then you have to be highly alert to your surroundings. Fish at least 15 feet away from the shoreline, look for alligators constantly, and leave the area if you see a big alligator approaching you. If possible try fishing with a friend so you can have another person looking out for alligators. Try to fish during the day and avoid the night since it will be harder to see a alligator. Always watch where you step and pay close attention to the floor around you at all times since water moccasins are masters at hiding in the grass. 3 Quote

Grim_Reaver Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 Depending on how secluded we're talking, you might see a sizable gator but thats a big if. I have seen big brutes basking in ppls yards near by in the Wesley Chapel area but it's been many years and the insane amount of development has most likely pushed any remaining ones out. As stated before, a knife won't help against gators or snakes. Boots and awareness are important. 1 Quote

There are lots of places here in Tennessee that probably have good fishing, but it's not worth the risk of dealing with the tweakers for me to go and try it. OP! Forget the knives and just get a spear. https://www.coldsteel.com/products/spears/hunting-spears/boar-spear.html Quote

Grouse were taken with the 12 gauge semi-auto, deer with the 30-30 saddle-rifle. Quote

Super User FishTank Posted December 20, 2019 Super User Posted December 20, 2019 Having family that lived in Bradenton for many years, I have fished down there many many times. My opinion, a knife is useless as well is a gun. Gators are very smart and pretty much know where you are at all times even though you don't see them. You need to know when they are active and when they are mating. They also smart enough to look out for fisherman. They look at what you catch as a potential, easy meal that they don't have to fight for. When they are not active, the birds will come to the shore line and it's usually safe to fish at that time (but still be cautious) plus the fish are out to eat. Quote
