Joe_w1234 Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I want to get an a waver or two so I can try out glide baits. Would my 7’ MH casting rod be able to throw one? I’m looking at the 168 size as well as the 120. I know I probably won’t be able to do the 168 but I’m mostly wondering about the 120. Any help is appreciated thanks. Quote
Tizi Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I think for a 120, you could use a frog rod rated up to 2 ounces I would think. Anything larger, you should get a dedicated rod. I ended up with the Daiwa DX heavy. 1 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted December 18, 2019 Super User Posted December 18, 2019 Fast action? I know most MH rods are usually rated for 3/4 or 1 oz. The S Waver 120 is a tad over 1 oz. Either way you shouldn't have any problem throwing the 120 on your rod. 1 Quote
Joe_w1234 Posted December 18, 2019 Author Posted December 18, 2019 @Tizi and @NorthernBasser UPDATE: the rod says the lure wight is 3/8 to 1 1/2. Quote

Hook2Jaw Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 It'll lob out there fine on a MH, and with the weight of a waver you'll get distance without issue. I, personally, wouldn't try to really load a cast on that stick. I prefer not to modify my rods into 2 piece sticks. 1 minute ago, Tizi said: That should work...for lighter swimbaits. That'll easily handle the 120. You could probably get away throwing the 168 on it as well. When casting the 168, just lob it (like Hook2Jaw said) more than straight casting. 1 1 Quote
Super User webertime Posted December 18, 2019 Super User Posted December 18, 2019 I regularly threw 168s on a Fury 735. Great rod for it. 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted December 18, 2019 Super User Posted December 18, 2019 if your rod is a MH and rated up to 1.5 oz it must be a MH pitching stick. I throw the 168 on my avid heavy with zero worries and its rated to 1.5 but st croix is known to run powerful. The good news is that the hooks on the 168 are beefy and you can give them a little juice without tearing them out like on a crankbait. Longer rods work better for big baits because they dont load and unload as fast. (knowing that rod speed is a function of percentage of length) An optimum rod for throwing that bait would abe a heavy, Medium fast rated up to 2 oz. 1 Quote

What medium heavy casting rid is rated for 3/8- 1 1/2 oz lures? I fully realize no standard exist however crankbait rods and the vast majority of MH bass rods are 1/4-1 oz lures, heavy or H rods tend to be rated 38- 1 1/4 orc1 1/2 oz. Irod IRG754F Freds Magic frog rod is rated 1/2-2 oz and ideal for the application, I used this rod for 168 S-Wavers, don't have any 120's. Tom 1 Quote

Tom I really had no idea it went that high when i bought it... (not that it's a bad thing) It is a Bass Pro Shop Pro Qualifier 2 rod. As far as I know, it is pretty nice, I had the tourney special a few years back, and it was a hunk o junk, but I've heard that as you move up the price range, BPS rods start to get pretty good, plus i got it for 60 bucks. Anyway, here's some proof: Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 18, 2019 Super User Posted December 18, 2019 That is why it's impossible to respond to rod questions, no standards. Definately a H rod by most general use rod makers. The rod is labeled fast and if it's truly a stiff fast action rod it may not work for treble hook lures very well. The Irod is labeled fast but it's a glass/graphite composite frog rod that is a more moderate action. Tom 1 Quote

I do have a medium spinning rod that has pretty moderate action, so I plan on using that for treble hook baits. Edit: It certainly is pretty stiff, much more than the mh dobyns colt I had until I snapped it in a door...(that rod definitely had a pretty light action) Quote
VolFan Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 I would bet that that rod doesnt have a particularly fast action, and would be great for the Wavers. 1 Quote
