I have used .5-1 oz Swimbaits on my frog rod, but I am looking at purchasing a dedicated Swimbait combo. I am thinking about the Irod Genesis 2 783 sb and the Daiwa Tatula 200 with 17lb cxx. I will mostly be throwing 1-3 ounce baits. Any thoughts?

You can go a little lighter on line at that weight range

I would say the bait makes a huge difference.  Are you running a huddleston on the jig hook only and giving it all you have winching them in or are you running a treble bait and fishing somewhat aggressive.  Throwing hard baits i would think you would be fine ( I run 20 YHB on a dobyns 806)  I have run as low as 12 YHB on my white python tossing 168 waivers and other hard baits.  I believe your choice is a decent one that should not give you any major pains.

I have that exact same combo, with 17lb Sufix Elite line. I throw 2 oz huds well, however tossing a 3 oz bait (might) be pushing the limit  of the rod. I have not tried any 3 oz baits yet, so take that with a grain of salt.

The rod is rated for up to 4 ounces, how well will the rod keep treble hooks pinned?

It will mostly be trebled baits.

The running theme with swimbait rods is that their sweet spot is about half of the rated weight, and anything much above that sweet spot overloads them unless you just do light lob casts. Irod makes some nice rods and a Dobyns 795 or 806 would also suit your needs well. If you think you may get into swimbait fishing with 3-4 oz glides and Hudd 68's and just want one rod, it may be worthwhile to just go for the 806 in a Fury and upgrade the reel to a Tranx 300. Best of luck... swimbaiting can get quite addicting!

Rod ratings are seldom, if ever true, i.e. they may say 4 oz, but in reality 2.5, maybe 3 oz would be the max.

I don't fish treble baits with mine, but I would guess that with the softer tip, you should be o.k., providing you fight the fish correctly. I'll see if my Son has any 3 oz baits that I could try, if so. I'll post a review, but it won't be until after Christmas, which may not be of much help.

Irods are fairly well lure weight rated but I wouldn't use a soft heavy top hook 3 oz swimbait with IRG 783 Swimbait JR rod.

Regarding line Compare by diameters. All the 17 lb lines suggested are .016 Dia, Sunline Deefier Armillo 25 lb is .016 Dia and I use it for all my swimbaits over 1 oz.
