DomQ Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 Ive got an oportunity to pick one up for 200 bucks America, was wondering if the issues with the anti reverse were ever fixed and if the reel is worth it at that price. Never had an abu reel myself but I have fished a gen3 revo sx if I remember correctly. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted December 16, 2019 Super User Posted December 16, 2019 I had the original. Had a great braking system. Gears turned really rough after a year. Got rid of it. I now am a fan of the Lews tournament pro. Similar brakes that work just as well if not better. It's also 10000 times smoother. Can be bought at Sportsmans outfitters for 139$. At their prices you could go up a level from that reel and still be around $200. 1 Quote
Shimano_1 Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 My buddy fishes nothing but abu and says that reel is the least favorite he's ever owned. I personally wouldn't touch it for 200. There are better options if you do some research 1 Quote
RyneB Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 I like my MGXs, but you can get the discontinued Abu ALX on Ebay for much cheaper than that and its every bit as good as the MGX. It just doesn't look as good or have a carbon handle. But it's a solid little reel that is super light. I actually sold 2 of my MGX and bought 5 ALX and had a few dollars to spare. 1 Quote
Westcoast Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Right now you can buy one on amazon Canada for $239 cnd. So $200us isn’t that great of a deal. It is a nice light reel but definitely not worth full retail. I do definitely like the alx, it’s small not as light but feels stronger and can be had for dirt cheap. 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted December 18, 2019 Super User Posted December 18, 2019 Tackle tour did a review on a Lews with a magnesium frame and they stated the magnesium transmits more gear feel than aluminum in any reel. I don't know how true that is but I do I know your only a few 10ths of an ounce lighter all things being equal. I'll stick to aluminum framed reels.. 1 Quote
cadman Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I have all ABU reels and don't have an issue with any of them I have (7) MGX's and 3 MGXtremes. Nothing wrong with the reels. Lightweight and can cast very light lures. I will tell you that they were all over greased when I bought them, along with over greased bearings. First thing to do is get rid of all of that grease if it is new. Second thing to do is polish your brake plate to a mirror finish. It will help and smooth out your brakes. $200 is a good price if it's new. If used, we're talking about $140 -$170 mint condition. If you have any concerns about the reel or need help cleaning it, you can PM me and I will help you out. 1 Quote
CrankFate Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 I have an MGXTreme2 that I got this season. At that price it’s a no brainer. Add dry carbontex, especially under the main gear and all issues related to the drag being too light are gone. The negative reviews on this reel are overblown and passed down from only a few people. It’s a great reel. The biggest negative I have on it is the handle is grossly too short. Add a longer carbon handle and dry Carbontex and you got a great super light reel that can do a lot more than finesse. 1 Quote

But I have never had any issues with the MGX even the used ones I bought. Finally, you are correct, on the drag issue, don't put grease on the drag and you will have a good strong drag. 1 Quote

It quickly became one of my favorite reels. It fishes much stronger than its weight and can handle a wide range of applications. Quote
