Tizi Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 I have access to excellent pallet material and want to build a rod locker for my garage. I am looking for instructions or ideas. I would love to have slide out rod holders, like slide out cabinets in the kitchen...Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 16, 2019 Super User Posted December 16, 2019 I don't have any plans or ideas for you, but I'd like to share this picture of pallet I made out of old coffee tables. ? https://oaklandpallet.com/images/Files/Original/635122106399409921_New-48x40-Block.jpg 3 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 So who is in the market for a nice pallet? Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 @J Francho, that's the nicest pallet I've seen. I wouldn't think of setting around bale on it. OP, the slides for those would probably be pretty expensive (there are 8' slides). Maybe a nice door or something with what you have on hand? 1 1 Quote
5/0 Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 My daughter made a nifty head board for her bed out of old pallets. Turned out pretty nice! Only problem was getting the 1x4 slats off one side, those screw nails are a pain to get out! Quote
Tizi Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 I work for an aerospace company. We get many sizes of brand new pallets daily. A guy that works there, breaks down all pallets for exercise. He will get me the best wood and whatever I need. One person at work did their entire garage floor in 4x4s. Another guy built a shed, another a garage shop bench. All sizes of pallets. Quote
Rook Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 I keep my Mitchell reels and Garcia Conolon rods in my old gun cabinets. Some of the cabinets I put glass shelves in for the reels. 4 Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted December 18, 2019 Posted December 18, 2019 If you have access to something like good pallet material (and you mentioned all sizes, so I'm assuming longer than the standard 42" ones), it's a shame to let it become kindling, or worse, go to the landfill. You mentioned having a drawer slide function. Where is it going to be (under a workbenches or overhead cabinet, on the garage door itself, etc.) and how many and how long are the rods going in it? Tizi Posted December 18, 2019 Author Posted December 18, 2019 I was thinking slide out rod racks. Slides on top and bottom. I am hoping to store up to 8’ rods, closer to 7’6”. I currently have about 20 rods. Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 18, 2019 Super User Posted December 18, 2019 Take a look at round home rod racks. Bolt the round rack to a sliding bottom tray and use a 8' tall wardrobe garage cabinet with doors for a design. Tom 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted December 19, 2019 Super User Posted December 19, 2019 Something like this? 3 1 Quote
Tizi Posted December 19, 2019 Author Posted December 19, 2019 Fantastic! Exactly. But multiple. Rods on each side. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted December 19, 2019 Super User Posted December 19, 2019 You should have at least 3 boxes and only fit 4-5 rod on each side. Use 4 wheel or caster on bottom and drawer rail on the side to guide the boxes in/out. The only problem I see from this design is, you will have to make room on top to be able to fit the rod in holder. Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 I understand what you were thinking of now. That's a nifty storage idea, and unless you want really long (and expensive) slides, what @Bass_Fishing_Socal about the 4-5 rods per drawer side seems like a.good idea. 1 Quote
