N.Y. Yankee Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 I have a strong aversion to putting line or my dirty fingers in or near my mouth when fishing, but I want to lube my knots when I tie on or splice. Would a light smear of Chapstick cause the knot to slip? I have heard of fly fishermen doing this. I have not tried it yet. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted December 14, 2019 Super User Posted December 14, 2019 Yes it works great. Just buy a tube dedicated to knots not lips. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted December 14, 2019 Super User Posted December 14, 2019 I'd just use water in a small spray bottle. https://www.michaels.com/spray-bottle-by-artminds/10212993.html Quote
johnD. Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Works great I use it for saltwater applications all of the time , where it's hard to cinch down 80lb/100lb leader. Quote

Super User Crestliner2008 Posted December 14, 2019 Super User Posted December 14, 2019 I've been wetting knots with my saliva for the past 50 years with no ill effects. Cheap too. 6 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted December 14, 2019 Super User Posted December 14, 2019 Use the Mike Iconelli camel spit technique. 3 Quote

Hook2Jaw Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Fishing line has been designed with your saliva in mind. Spitting it reduces the consistency -- the only way to make sure your line of choice does not burn is to swish your splish through your teeth until it's of foamy consistency and then threading the line between your lips. The fish gods smile on those who ***** their face flesh with trebles before cinching. 1 1 Quote
Hulkster Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 always lick it before you cinch it 1 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 15, 2019 Super User Posted December 15, 2019 Chapsitck, can't say I have ever heard of using It for knot tying, fly rod ferrules lubricant yes. Tom Quote

Tom Considering that Chapstick® contains a couple types of wax, lanolin and mineral oil - it's definitely more suited for lubrication that stays around. I'd be concerned that it'd stay around long enough for the knot to slip. In order Spit KVD L&L conditioner Water Those are what I'd use. 1 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted December 15, 2019 Super User Posted December 15, 2019 Spit on it and go to work. Quote
schplurg Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Licking line? Heck, I floss with it as I tie! Kill two birds... 3 Quote
Bandersnatch Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 Just stick it in your mouth. It's a thing Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted December 16, 2019 Super User Posted December 16, 2019 Saliva or small water bottle would get it done - KVD line conditioner if you don't mind the $$ over saliva or water . Quote
Super User J Francho Posted December 16, 2019 Super User Posted December 16, 2019 You want to hear something crazy? I don't wet my line when cinching knots all the time. Carefully cinched, it makes no difference, in my experience. Beginning to think it's a myth. 2 Quote

Same here - never with a Palomar, and about half the time with everything else. There’s data out there suggesting saliva can actually make knots weaker in some instances. Use an actual lubricant or don’t use anything at all ? 1 Quote

Mono I use spit. FM Quote

I’ll try and track down specifics, but the knot tests were done on both nylons and fluoros, and what they found was with certain knots, saliva alone didn’t allow the knot to completely cinch tight, so the knot would slip/heat/weaken and break when it was loaded to breaking in the tests. Using an actual lubricant like silicone or wax (lip balm) allowed for complete seating and stronger knots. 1 Quote
