Curious to know how many of you out there would rather buy plain jig heads and add your own skirt on the fly instead of buying pre-made skirted jigs? I'm referring to having a selection of plain jig heads and skirts available, and changing out the skirt quickly as opposed to carrying a bunch of pre-made skirted jigs.

I fish as a back seat and would like to trim down the amount of stuff I carry.

I use both -

Also I use a Texas Rigged plastic with a shirt quite a bit.

Allows for complete customization on the fly.

From the weight, the hook (type & size) the skirt & of course the trailer.

Takes a minute to rig and can get a little jacked up after a fish catch,

but it's a decent way to have options rather than 50 jigs - which I have any way.

Wait a minute . . . .

First you should have a good idea what size and color jigs are working before you enter any tournament that has prize money.

Having a kit of jig components allows you to experiment with skirts to determine what works and doesn't. The problem is how many plain painted jigs do you plan to take? How many. Different weights, 1/4-3/8-1/2-3/4 grass or football??

Basically a box of various plain jigs painted 1 color, black.

A box of rubber collar silicone 6 each skirts in Shad, black, red/ brown crawdad, green pumpkin and bluegill, etc, etc.

A box or bags of trailers in various colors.

Good luck,

Tom

PS, you never have enough of what is working.

Unless you feel that jigs will be the main presentation for the duration of the tournament, you can get by with a dozen or so skirted jigs using different size and action trailers to adjust the fall rate.  I would pack a large assortment of lure types and choose what to bring on board after talking with the boater and finding out how he plans to fish. Non boaters have a tendency to bring as much gear as they can, the reason being they don't want to be without something that may be a good producer.  There is that possibility, but there is a greater probability that most of what you bring will never see use.

Thanks Tom. I fish club tourneys so there's no money involved, except for big fish.

My aim is to set up an all around jig box to make space for other stuff. It would hold:

Skirted casting/arky skirted jigs in 3/8 & 1/2. Black, brown, and green colors.

Skirted flipping jigs in 1/2, black and brown.

Plain football heads in 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2, and 3/4.

Plain casting/arky heads in 3/8 & 1/2.

Shaky heads in 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4.

Round heads in 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4.

Tube heads in 1/8 & 1/4.

Dart heads in 1/8 & 1/4.

Ned heads in a couple sizes.

An assortment of banded/collared skirts in various colors would be in zip locks.

Trailers, mostly grubs and craws, will have their own boxes or zip locks.

Sorry for the inventory, just trying to streamline a bit, and hoping something like this would work.

You got that right Papa! I'm hoping the above will help with that!

You have what we call "bass jigs" those with weed guard and finesse plain jigs or jigs that normally don't have a skirt.

Shaky heads, ball,  dart and mushroom heads are normally fished by adding a soft plastic worm.

It's weed gaurd style skirted " bass jig " that you plan to kit using a few different colors.

Should work out OK.

Tournaments I only took what I use 75-80% of the time; 1/8 oz darts or ball heads, 1/4 oz shaky heads and 1/2 oz "bass jigs in qty of 6 or more and 2 each od size close to those weights. Rarely do lose more then 6 jigs during a tournament and the back up are close enough if needed.

Always carry a 3600 box with tied BOSS hubs for my favorite creatures.

I fish the jigs that come with skirts already attached.   I replace the skirt when it becomes too beat up to be fished any longer.
