Cold water speed cranking

Just watched a vedio on the subject of speed cranking for cold water bass, very interesting.

The lure is R2Sea 75mm (3") 3/4 oz deep diver that runs to 18' in natural colors. 

The tecnique is fast retrieve with stop and go to trigger a reaction strike.

I know this works and Megabass made a similar lure about 5 years that isn't any longer available, so very interested in the R2Sea Tactical lure but sold out until next March....back orders!

I was fishing a squarebill pretty fast Monday in 50* water. Only got 2 bites on it, but it's winter time and when 1 of them looks like this, I'm okay with it.

I like to pull them 2.0 mph while sitting at the steering wheel and watching the depth finder all winter long

Is it like a suspending diver? I mean, when it stops, does it really stop, or does it start quickly rising like most divers?

The Tactical DD is a floater, but its the way it floats thats the juice.  When you stop it, the bait wobbles and backs up towards a following fish which is why they suggest you throw it on braid.  Braid means no line coil to pull the bait forward which lets it do its magic.  I know of a few other cranks that will back up and on the right day the fish eat them with anger.

50!!  I need to move to a place where that's winter!

I went out 10 days ago and the water temp was 36!  Now it's covered in ice!

Run to a different part of the lake and it's that cold, all depends on the wind direction, speed, and generation. The wind changed direction and the water temp dropped 3 degrees in that spot from when I started until when I left. Guys complain about figuring a normal lake out, try a power plant lake where water temps vary wildly from day to day and hour to hour.

What was the Megabass lure? Just want to see what it looks like.

 

I'm very curious about this lure myself, especially the depth range. I want to know if it will run properly in that 1-5 ft range. Should've bought some the night the video aired...

 

Also fish will hit/choke various other square bills.

I've been catching on a Shad Rap with medium retrieve till it hits something (the stop) and,  like usual, most bites in cold water are felt as the rod loading up as I begin the retrieve again. This last weekend I was fishing a smaller shallow lake, water temp was 42 and they didn't want to play. I did get one dink on a bladebait yo-yoing on a shallow drop from 8 to about 12 feet.

The Megabass lure was a Deep-x 300.  I ordered a few of the DDs a few days after launch.  Still waiting.  I plan to try them over the Christmas holiday, if they get to me by then!

The quarry I was at was even colder on the other side.

Me too but there's always something new to try.  Kind of like when I got back into this bass addiction and did well catching 12-14 inch bass on wacky rigs and weightless t-rigs and felt there was no need to try big skirted jigs since the bass weren't that big, then decided to try them and caught much bigger bass in the same areas.

It was over 5 years ago maybe longer before the Deep X series and looks very similar, I have 1 in clown lost all the Shad colors. The lure was a very tight wiggle deep diving crank just under 3" and weighs about 5/8 oz. The Tactical lure looks a little longer and heavier and should work good for speed cranking.

I do believe it would work. For me a crankbait is always about a reaction bite no matter the speed or water temp. And I feel I've been giving a similar presentation with lipless baits.

 

I cant say what makes their $15 crank better than other tight wobblers until I held one and fished it. Pictures always deceive me. I feel like berkeley's line of deep cranks would also work. Cant remember the name but they are much smaller profile than most DD due to adding a small weight in the lip. They also have a nice tight wobble

I like this idea and crankbaits have been good to me on occasion in upper 40s to 50 degree water.  When not frozen, the water here gets down into the 30s with 39 degree water in the deepest areas based on the physical properties of water.  I don't think much, if any, of the water the Texas and California guys are fishing gets this cold so I will have to try this for myself in waters at these temperatures.  Maybe I just haven't spent enough time on it to get it to work in water just above freezing temperatures in the past.  I have to see it myself before I believe it is a consistent approach at these water temperatures.  It would definitely be part of the arsenal in southern Missouri where water temperatures stay in the mid to upper forties and even the 50s in winter on the larger lakes.

The majority of California bass lakes are located below 5,000 ft altitude where the climate is warmer. However I learned to bass fish at Big Bear lake located in SoCal at 7,200 ft evelation and freezes. We have several micro climates mostly influenced by Pacific Ocean coastal areas, high alititude mountains and deserts, anglers can find nearly every type of bass water from rivers, delta but mostly man made impoundments for water stroage and flood control located at the base of mountain canyons at lower alititude that stay above freezing temperatures.

Speed cranking isn't something that I have tried, lots of crankbait fishing during the pre spawn now at our local lakes to about mid Feburary, very interesting concept.

some do. forsure. if they cant be revived they are fillets for the freezer.

I have been wondering when they say "cold", how cold are they talking?  Most of the places they fish probably don't hit 30 degree temps or ice up. 

 

Also, I am disappointed they are OOS.  When they get new lures they should limit the amount sold to each customer so everyone has a chance to get 1 or 2.  I watched the video and it wasn't available yet, by the time I looked they were gone...

I watched the episode and they were saying Clear Lake gets down to 36 degrees in the Winter.  They said at times, there can be ice on the shoreline.  That's pretty cold.  I agree, OOS as soon as I watched the video.

I'll be interested to see how successful the baits are for our members. 

 

River2Sea seems to be a manufacturer happy to partner with celebs, just like they have with ISH, etc. I'm not familiar with the owner of R2S, but they are much more into partnerships and labeling than some of the other lure guys.

A fishing partner gave me the Megabass crankbait after catching bass on it all day. 
Had I realized the lure wouldn’t be around much longer I would have bought more a few.
