I have a small 15 ft bass tracker. Not a lot of room for storage.

i was thinking of using this net to not only net the bass but also use it to catch live shad.

Does anyone have any experience with this net to know if it would work with the shad.

Or any other ideas?

It will be fine for bass, but you won't be able to move it fast enough to catch shad. A throw net is best for shad

The problem I see with the Pro-Mar Net referenced is too small of net holes create way too much water drag to maneuver the net in the water effectively for fast moving Shad.

The best Shad nets have 1/4 monofilament nets with low drag resistance in the water vs nylon or rubberized nylon C & R net bags. The other problem is handle length, longer is better when trying to net shad. This leads you to a telescoping net handle like the op referenced the stores under 50" and extends over 72". The ideal netting for shad isn't ideal for bass. 

Frabil makes a few herring/Shad nets that work you.

By "shad" do you mean the big ones you catch with a tiny jig?  Anything smaller, you need a cast net or minnow trap.  For bass, I'd look long and hard at the BearClaw from Frabil.  I use on in my kayak, and it works great.

Thanks for the information. 

Unfortunately I believe California does not allow throw nets to catch bait fish such as shad.

i may need to get a custom made shad net to fit within my boat.

California doesn't allow the use cast nets in fresh water. The Shad have predominately is Threadfin that average about 3" long about 1/2-3/4" wide and 1/4" net mesh works good. You will only be able to net Threadfin Shad during low light periods when they school under docks. After the sun is up and the Shad move off shore you need a 36"-40" long handle mono mesh net to effectly net them.
