Well its that time of year and I am Christmas shopping for myself and I have a spared SLX 7 speed reel that needs a partner. I have a Fury and Sierra already. I love Dobyn's rods so I check their refurbished section a lot. This time two caught my eye in the Champion series. 733 and 744 casting. I thought why not got a step up to a Champion for Sierra price.  The is going to be a texas rig, senko, jig, chatter and spinnerbait rod. Basically an all around go to. I use a 7' skeet reese victory pro carbon right and I'm looking to replace it. Is the added length going to be a problem? Which one would you guys choose?

The 734C should be perfect for those presentations, and is also a great jig rod outside of the real thick stuff for a 3/8oz or 1/2oz jig as well. A 744C would be a little bit too heavy, and the 733C is better suited for weightless softplastics, small spinnerbaits or even a square bill.

What is the difference between a 734 and 744? Just an inch in length or is it more than that?

tip is faster on the 744. You want the 734.

Makes sense. I just looked again. 744 is extra fast. Thanks guys. I'm going to keep an eye out for one.

The 744 is an extra fast tip. The Sierra 704C is my relative experience here and that has a pretty has a solid tip for what is normally called a MH/F rod which is what makes it a great lighter power jig rod but not too stiff to fish a spinnerbait or chatterbait.

For the techniques you listed the DC 734C would be on target.  The DC 744C is designated as a Jig Special and has, as mentioned, an Extra Fast tip action.  The tip is very reactive and the rod locks up pretty quick, hence a jig action.  If you can swing an Extreme 744 refurb you will be blown away by the increased sensitivity.  Call Dobyns and tell them what you want because they are behind on listing available refurbished models right now.

I have a couple of Champion XP DC 734 C F/H & a couple of the Champion XP DC 733 C F/H.  The 734 C  is the rod I would choose between the 2 you are thinking about it's a great rod it will handle everything you listed plus some. I tend to throw a lot of lighter baits in the spring, weightless trick worms, Snakes, 3/16 oz spinnerbaits & use lighter line & I use the 733 C

I agree with the 734c recommendation in the Champion or Sierra line. The 734c is the most versatile Dobyns rod period.

744 is a faster action than the 734. For what you want, get the 734c. That rod is the most all purpose rod EVER.

Everyone's already put in great input. I've owned the 733, recently sold it, and currently still own my 744. Both great rods, but purpose is going to make the difference. I'd go with the 744 for the applications you mentioned. It's a bit stouter rod but still has a nice soft tip. Not quite as soft as the XP models, but comparable to a Shimano Expride, the Dobyn's tend to have a slower action making their rods very versatile. I've thrown 1/4+ ounce Keitechs, 6 and 7 inch Senkos, 1/2 ounce spinners, 1/2 chatter baits, texas rigs and lighter jigs on my 744 and it's performed well for all of them. I've even done some spoon jigging on it.

Between the 2, I'd personally go with the 744. But if I could only carry 1 rod, for example during bank fishing, I'd go with the 733.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I have made up my mind on the 734. I really want a Champion for the extra sensitivity for bottom contact presentations but my wife would flip if I spent 260 on a fishing rod. @Columbia craw thanks for the tip. Going to call and see if they have any refurbs
