Tanner1Wilkerson Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 So I’ve got a Shimano Stradic Ci4+ in the C3000 size paired with a 7’0 Shimano Zodias Medium Heavy and I’ve tried 8-12lb mono and 30lb braid to throw shakey heads/wacky rig/ned rig pretty much a finesse designated rod and it refuses to cast more than 15-20 yards. Does anyone know what I need to change to get to at least 40 yards or is it simply just an oversized combo for the technique I’m trying. Any smooth braid or mono brand suggestions welcome, a lot of the resistance seems to come from the ridge of the spool when the line comes off. Thanks. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 Your spool is under filled. Spool it to just below the bevel and you’ll get better results. Keep in mind the rod has more to do with casting than anything else. Makes it loads correctly with the weight you’re throwing. 3 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted December 2, 2019 Super User Posted December 2, 2019 ^ Listen to Mike, he knows of what he speaks. Personally, I toss my wacky/ned rigs on either my Avocet/ML with 8# mono or the Pres-25/UL with 4# YZ-Hybrid...for me, finesse techniques like that are for lighter rods Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted December 2, 2019 Super User Posted December 2, 2019 I've got that reel. I have 15 lb. braid on it, and I won't put heavier braid on it. As for mono, I personally don't put anything heavier than .10 (10 mil) nylon on it, but that's just me. I have a 4000 size ci4+ that I use for heavier monofilament, either nylon or fluorocarbon. Works much better. jj 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 2, 2019 Super User Posted December 2, 2019 As DVT correctly pointed out the line on the spool is under filled. What you noted as the spool ridge and Mike referenced as the bevel, the line should be filled about 1/16"-1/8" from the top of the spool rim or even with the base of bevel radius or ridge as you called it. iMO the your 3000 spinning reel maximum line dia is .010 for mono or FC, 30 lb braid should be OK with 8 lb leader or straight 8 lb mono or FC, spool filled properly. mc6524 Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 Thank yes the line on the reel is an issue, but I think the main problem is the rod. You need to be using a Med/light rod. An extra-fast action will maximize distance, but you should also do well with a fast action. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 3, 2019 Global Moderator Posted December 3, 2019 30lb braid is heavy for a spinning reel if you're looking for distance IMO. 10 to 15 pound braid is the sweet spot for the combination of strength and casting distance on spinning gear. Obviously like others said, a full spool will greatly improve distance as well. 1 Quote
LCG Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I have a buddy with that exact combo and he has no issues casting. Like others said fill the spool just below the rim of the spool, use lighter braid 10-15 lb is plenty, and throw lures in the middle of the rods rating and you should be able to make 40-50 yard cast no problem. Accuracy still trumps distance, but that's another topic. Quote

The faster the rod action is the less the rod helps launching the lure. The opposite is true a more moderate action will increase casting distance but reduces lure feedback vibrations. What kills spinning reel casting distance is friction comming off the spool from under filled spools and line slap hitting the 1st 2 large diameter guides from too large diameter or stiff line creating big coils. mc6524 Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I would respectfully disagree. The action is defined by where the the tip of the rod actually bends. The after the action the greater rod load, or “whip” from the rod tip and you should expect a longer cast. Matter of fact, G-Loomis use to advertise longe and more accurate casts with an extra fast action Quote
