Clockwork Posted November 30, 2019 Posted November 30, 2019 Saw this reel on sale for 75$ at bass pro, how do these things last? The reel feels nice as I put my hands on it yesterday. Thinking of buying one but wanted to ask around first if I should pull trigger or spend a bit more on something else. Quote
BassCats Posted November 30, 2019 Posted November 30, 2019 They are great reels for the money. If you do a search on the pro qualifier you will see they last forever. One member used and detailed his use of one for couple years. Quote
Russ E Posted November 30, 2019 Posted November 30, 2019 if you are patient , they go on sale for around $50.00. a couple times a year. I have an older pro qualifier and a newer pro qualifier II (with the blue spool and tension adjustment) they are both decent reels. the older model seems to be built a little better. one thing to keep in mind is it only has a 10 pound drag. It works fine for most applications, but not ideal anywhere you need to horse a big fish out of heavy cover. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted November 30, 2019 Super User Posted November 30, 2019 I would look elsewhere. I have never been a fan of this reel at any point in time. If you are looking for one, just ask one of the old guys at BPS if this will be a reel you will be happy with or if you can depend on it. The old timers usually won't steer you wrong and they can give their first hand dealings on this reel. I would also check there websites reviews. If they are like they were in the past, you will find some people who love and some who hate it. As far as other offerings, there are several at the $100 price point that would be great> Shimano SLX, Daiwa Tatula 100, Abu Garcia X (SX when on sale), Lew's (they have a couple), etc. If you keep your eyes open, you can find a new Quantum Smoke HD for around $100. Also, a great reel. 1 Quote
OG Crankster Posted November 30, 2019 Posted November 30, 2019 You can buy a Daiwa Fuego CT right now for 69.99. Great reel for the price. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 30, 2019 Posted November 30, 2019 The Lews, Revo and PQ are all built in the same factory and share tooling and many parts. Nothing inherently wrong with any of them. The PQ is a great bang for the buck on sale <$100. It will hold up fine if cared for at all. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted December 1, 2019 Super User Posted December 1, 2019 While I don't own a PQ2, i have an older version and I wasn't a fan. It was a solid reel but it was pretty heavy which was a downfall for me. I did use it for cranking though because at the time, it was one of the few LH retrieves with a low gear ratio. It was way better than the Kastking i bought about a year ago though. Quote

Shimano_1 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 I have an older one that's held up for years. Bought the 2 back in the spring for 50 bucks and it lasted 3 trips throwing squarebills before it crapped out. Apparently others have had better luck 1 Quote
zell_pop1 Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 The PQ1 had better reviews, and I had the 5.2:1 version for awhile and it was ok for the money but nothing special. All those Lews, Abus, Pfluegers, BPS reels are decent if you get the Korean made $130+ MSRP ones especially if you get them on clearance. I would avoid the cheaper Chinese made ones. Now Cabelas had Daiwa made baitcasters like the Arachnid, a blue colored Tatula type R, one of the negatives of BPS buying them out. Quote
Dirtyeggroll Posted December 1, 2019 Posted December 1, 2019 It’s a great <$60 dollar reel. Probably one of the best. Will likely be $50 during the spring sale. Quote
Clockwork Posted December 1, 2019 Author Posted December 1, 2019 Thanks guys for the responses I will probably pass on the reel and find something else a bit better first, I might pick it up during the spring sale if it gets down to 50$. Now on to figure out which one I want now. Maybe the SLX, Fuego or something in the 200$ range 1 Quote
RyneB Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 I grabbed 2 last year for $50 during the spring sale. I rigged both up with braid for when I want to switch to braid on the water. So basically they're backups. They impressed me. One tourney I tossed a Plopper 130 with 65lb power pro on the reel and it performed very well. Quote
Russ E Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 Cyber Monday sale has the pro qualifier 2 for $59.97 2 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted December 2, 2019 Posted December 2, 2019 I am a Shimano fan, but bought a big sale PQ six years ago on a whim, put Sufix 832 on it, and used it for frogging for three years and was really impressed with it...never a problem. I do maintain my own reels and its internal components were just like more expensive reels. The only reason I only had it three years is because I wanted a Chronarch MGL and with $50 for it on a trade in and gift cards it went bye bye. Quote
