Super User Bird Posted November 27, 2019 Super User Posted November 27, 2019 Reading various threads on this site, I see where members are striping all reels of line for winter storage. Is that due to line memory, like floro? Just good common practice ? Once a year thing ? I'm a braid guy and re-tie often but never stripped my reels for winter storage.....just curious. Quote
Todd2 Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 I change my mono a few times a year, usually when it gets a little low or seems haggard. Braid is a beast, easily can last a few seasons. I fish during Winter so I never strip off or Winterize boat. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted November 27, 2019 Super User Posted November 27, 2019 My casting gear is either FC or braid. My spinning rigs are all braid. Quality FC is fairly durable and depending on a rigs use & or abuse - FC spooled rigs can last a season for me. Either way I only replace the 'top shot' down to backing (mono) if & when I need to. Braid routinely goes 'several' seasons before needing replacement and that's usually because it's getting short on the spool; again only replaced down to the mono backing (about 1/3 backing 2/3's braid). Also, I will 'end for end' both FC & braid down to the backing one time, before I can it. Saves a little $$. I never empty spools at seasons end just because - unless I plan to have a particular reel(s) serviced professionally. btw - bulk line purchase during big sales is a good thing. (think 1000 yd spools) A-Jay 4 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 27, 2019 Super User Posted November 27, 2019 Can't see any reason to strip reel spools of line until it's necessary. Braid will store on a reel spool indifinately, both FC and all monofilament lines deform under time and pressure but shouldn't affect the top 1/2 of the spooled line. I replace both mono and FC line several times a year do to wear and abrasion on the reels used a lot, other reels have line on them a few years. Tom 3 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted November 27, 2019 Super User Posted November 27, 2019 I buy bulk spools and change line often . This year I had a problem with 15 lb Big Game breaking on the hook-set . I've never experienced that before with Big Game , it has a history of good shock resistance .The spool was several years old and kept in a cool dark place. I tossed the spool and bought some fresh and no more breaking . So now I'm not going to allow the spools get over two years old . I'll change line even more frequently. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 27, 2019 Global Moderator Posted November 27, 2019 I change mine out when they get low and need refilled, if the line is damaged and needs replaced, or if I need a different type/size line for something. 1 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted November 27, 2019 Super User Posted November 27, 2019 I fish almost all braid to leader or straight braid except one reel. The braid I will usually reverse at the end of the season but I'll get a couple seasons out of it usually depending how much I retie. The one reel I have mono on I am replacing several times throughout the season and usually do strip it off at the end of the season just to avoid the bad memory. Quote
5/0 Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 As a spin off to the OP's question and this concerns FC and copolymer lines. I don't fish as often as many on this site, maybe 1-3 times a month, and have a few of my spinning and cast reels spooled with FC and copolymer. During the time between trips these pick up a bad case of memory, especially the spinning reels. I've even applied line conditioner occasionally during the down time and the night before an outing and it doesn't seem to help. Is this about all I can do short of spooling with braid? Thanks....Joe Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted November 27, 2019 Super User Posted November 27, 2019 During the fishing season I change line when the spool gets low. Some reels need new line faster than others. Around January I start cleaning the reels, and strip the line off down to the backing. It makes cleaning them easier. Quote
ike8120 Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 All line a few times a year, especially after getting snagged or catching a tree. All my fishing is from the bank. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted November 27, 2019 Super User Posted November 27, 2019 I back everything. Braid can last year's and FC when it gets low. Last year I started using more Armilo and that will get a new life annually. Probably doesn't need it, but it will make me feel better. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 27, 2019 Super User Posted November 27, 2019 Tournaments - Fresh line on all reels at start of season. Replace line for new tournaments. Will keep braid on reels if no nicks or cuts or blemishes are found when checking the line. Fun Fishing Setups - Leave it on all year until I use it up Reel Storage - Remove all line, including braid, and take pressure off spool and drag Quote

Harold Scoggins Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 Braid lasts, so not so much. I respool FC and mono early February and when ever it gets low on the spool. Quote
matbellon3 Posted November 27, 2019 Posted November 27, 2019 Braid-Until low or if any Blemishes (also will use braid on one reel then flip it) Fluorocarbon- Will start with new every season and change when worn or low Mono- Every twoish months during the season Quote
Super User slonezp Posted November 28, 2019 Super User Posted November 28, 2019 Fluoro and mono at least once a year, maybe more. Braid, every few years. Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 28, 2019 Super User Posted November 28, 2019 Dang! Monofilament & Fluorocarbon probably 3 weeks to maybe a month depending on what type of cover I'm fishing & how often I get hung up. Quote

Super User jbsoonerfan Posted November 28, 2019 Super User Posted November 28, 2019 I use straight braid 99% of the time. My moving bait rods I will change out and put new on about half way through the year. My bottom contact rods I will usually put new on about 4 times a year. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted November 28, 2019 Super User Posted November 28, 2019 It depends on the line and the setup. I usually can go almost 2 years without changing 12lb Invizx FC and 3+ years with Tatsu. Mono's like Big Game, Sunline Super Natural, Trilene XL, etc., it's usually every 3 months. With braid, it's just as needed. I also use 6lb Trilene 100% FC XL on spinning gear and it will usually will last year. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted November 29, 2019 Super User Posted November 29, 2019 Fluorocarbon gets changed annually in mid-late May or early June, Monofilament gets changed 3-4 times a year and braid gets changed when there is not enough on the spool which is 1-3 years depending on the thickness of the braid (50+ braid gets lower on the spool much quicker than thinner braid). For mono, I will put on the cheapest mono as soon as the lakes thaw out and in mid May to early June I will repool with Sufix Siege, my more expensive mono of choice. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted November 29, 2019 Super User Posted November 29, 2019 This could last me another season or a few more snags. 2 Quote
