The only time I use a swivel is on a whopper plopper.  Its before my leader so I dont get line twist. But thats really it.

You can put one about 18" - 24" up from your lure to lessen the chance for like twist (assuming that's your goal). However, if you switch to a braid mainline with a fluorocarbon leader, you won't have to worry about it at all.

This is definitely a northern thing.  Using a small swivel with light line and a light tube jig, around 18" up from the bait really allows the tube to helicopter randomly on it's descent.  It's a totally different presentation than dragging a tube on the bottom.

Very common to add a small light weight precision swivel like Spro for lures using a spinning reel to reduce line twist. Braid also gets twisted by a spinning reel, all line twist. Wind knots are a result of braid line twist, it takes more time for the twist to impact the line performance.

How far up the inline swivel is added depends on your casting technique, you do not want to reel the swivel into the rod tip guide.

Adding a small split ring and swivel directly to the lure eliminates any casting issues.

I agree with @Crestliner2008 about the swivels. I use a 10# mono main line, add a swivel and with about a 24" 8# floro leader.

Depending on how you set it up tubes will spiral on the fall causing line twist problems.

On a light jig, the tube will spiral on descent.  We actually want that to happen.  It's not as much of a problem with heavier weights, like a 3/4 oz. Big Dude head.  We're usually just dragging them on bottom.

Swivels for me only on flukes (about 18" above the bait), Carolina rigs and in line spinners.  Snap swivels on spoons work well.

Line twist should not be an issue on spinning outfits without the need for swivels IF you follow these tips:

I've never had twist problems with tubes, either tied directly to the FC leader or when using a small snap.  I don't think most cheap barrel swivels will reduce line twist; I think it takes a quality ball bearing swivel.  Hard data?  Nope.  Opinion/judgment.
