Super User gim Posted November 25, 2019 Super User Posted November 25, 2019 I’m considering asking for some costa sunglasses from Santa. I like the fantail model. For those of you that have costa sunglasses, what lens do you have and in what color? They recommend the green mirror for freshwater fishing. Is the glass lens that much better than the plastic/polycarbonate lens? Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted November 25, 2019 Super User Posted November 25, 2019 I have the Jose's in Green 580p and the Fantails in Grey 580g. I personally can't tell the difference if the glass is "better" than the plastic. I do think they glass is just a bit heavier but I don't think you would notice unless you put them on one after the other to see if you could tell. I am red/green color blind and I find the grey works better for me at contrasting things but on the other hand the green sure does brighten things up for me. Quote

Is the glass lens that much better than the plastic/polycarbonate lens? I'm a long term costa addict and i've had basically every lens type & color they make. I'll break this down really simply. The mirror color of the lens isn't important, what's important is the BASE lens color. Amber or Copper lens = best for bass fishing shallow. They let in the most light thus giving you the best contrast. If yo want a lens that's best for seeing fish in lakes, these are your colors. Sunrise mirror also falls in this category. Grey lens = these are fine for fishing BUT they block more light than amber/copper lenses. These are better for "every day" use as they do a better job of blocking light BUT they do have slightly less contrast than amber/copper. Honestly if you're buying a pair to get the most bang-for-the-buck while fishing, get a copper/amber/sunrise base lens. Then pick whatever mirror finish you think looks cool. My favorite pair is a Green mirror (copper) Blackfins. https://www.costadelmar.com/us/en/performance-technology/lenses 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 I have two pair of Costas. One pair with the glass lenses, the other has the polycarbonate ones. Trust me, the glass lenses are the way to go for clarity and seeing into the water.. They are a little heavier and if you decide on a big frame, the extra weight may turn you off to wearing them for long periods. For protection for physical injury you may want to go the poly route. I have both plastic and glass lenses as well. The plastic ones scratch WAY easier than the Glass. I've dropped my glass ones many many times and there's zero scratches. Not so much the case with my 580Ps. 1 Quote
OilfieldCowboy Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 Green mirror 580G is what I've been buying for as long as I've had Costa's. The only lenses that work better for me are Smith Chromapop, but they don't hold up nearly as well. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted November 25, 2019 Super User Posted November 25, 2019 Costa addict here. The first pair of Costa's I bought were the 580G lens in green mirror. These are a great lens with amazing clarity. Definitely nice to have on sunny days. I've since bought pairs to go with all of my needs. I've got a pair of 580G silver mirror (amber base) that are great all around for sunny or slightly overcast days. I've also got a pair of 580P sunset silver mirror (yellow base) that are amazing in low light conditions or on rainy days. I can wear these glasses clear up until dark and they allow me to see down in the water in low light levels, whenever I traditional lens would make it impossible to look into the water. Most days, I'll start the morning off wearing my yellow based lens before the sun gets high. Then I'll switch to one of my other pairs once the sun gets up. Quote
swhit140 Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 I just want to add that Costa has a great warranty. My Costa's were around 10 years old and the lens were delaminating. I contacted them about the issue, I just had to send my old pair back and a week later I had a new pair. I like to spend a little more for a better quality/warranty. It's worth it in my opinion. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 28, 2019 Global Moderator Posted November 28, 2019 I've got a pair of Fisch 580G. They're nice for those of us with plus sized melons. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted November 28, 2019 Super User Posted November 28, 2019 I suggest trying a pair on at a local retailer before ordering. Costas are notorious for sizes being different across their lines. One style in a large/x-large might fit fine but on another style it may be too tight. Most good sunglasses will have a standard distance across no matter the shape of the lens but Costas do not, if the lens has a slightly different shape then the size is often different even if two are listed as being medium. They are one of the best sunglasses on the market but try them on before ordering. I have a large head and I like copper lenses with a black frame, there is only 1 pair they make that fits, the Rincon. Quote
