One of the worst lines I have ever used.......

So I wanted to try something different in a heavy duty mono. I took some advice from a friend at work and tried Sufix Advance in 17lb and 14lb.  It had some good reviews online and a few bad ones but on average it sounded like it would be worth a shot.   I should have listened to the bad reviews.  This line has OK memory and OK knot strength.  The issue lies in that it doesn't last long.  The abrasion resistance is horrible.  I would make about 2 or 3 casts and line would be frayed.  I would then have to cut the line and retie.  Both 17lb and 14lb behaved this way and I wasn't fishing around rocks or heavy cover.  Also, I checked the guides on my rods and also the reels and both are fine. 

 

It's not too often that I find something in the fishing world that I would truly give a thumbs down to but this line qualifies.  If you have used it and have had good luck, all the better but I think I am going to stick to Big Game and P-Line CXX for this type of line.

Sounds to me like you need to check your guides for cracks or chips. If your getting frayed after a couple casts, I’ll bet at least one of them is missing a chunk of ceramic. That’ll ruin even the best line in no time.

I used 14lb & 17lb Suffix Advance in clear on my last trip to lake Baccarac without any problems. I used it here in Florida for a couple of months prior to give it a fair trial before Mexico. I liked it better than Sunline Defier Armilo which was my choice of copoly prior to trying the Advance. You either have got a bad batch of line or have some type of equipment malfunction.

Never used Sufix Advance (have Elite and Siege), but there is no way any line is going to need to be retied after 2-3 casts because of fraying.  I've used some pretty dang cheap lines over the years, but have never had a problem like that.  Something has to be wrong with your guides or you got the absolute worst spool of line ever made.

Most likely cracked ring on tiptop.  Use a Q-tip, insert into guides and rotate to see if the guide "grabs" the Q-tip or frays the Q-tip.  Check all the guides.

That was my first thought 2 months ago with 17lb but I have checked the guides and fished other lines and reels on the same rod with no issues for many hours.  The 14lb line has been pulled from the reel it was on 3 months ago and I have been using Sunline Natural on that setup since with no issues with that line.  

 

I have also used Siege, Elite and 832 braid with no issues but I has since found other lines that like better.  I just had hopes that Advance would be a better choice.  

 

I do still have the 17lb on a Revo Toro Beast and I have pulled a piece of it off to show (sorry, pic not the best) and a piece of 15lb CXX that was on the same rod spooled with a Shimano Calcutta 251.   The CXX is from last year and the Sufix Advance was used for about an hour and spooled in September of this year.

Bet you got a bad spool.   I use Big Game faithfully.  But I did get a bad spool one time in 30 years.  Guessing the machine that spooled it roughed  it up.

19 lb Armillo is .014D, 25 lb is .016D

Did you compare diameters or lb test?

I used Advance for the first time this year (12 lb) fishing chatterbaits. I had zero issues with it. But then again I wasn't bringing it through a lot of rock/wood either.

I had the same experience with 6lb Advance. Didn't last a day of fishing. Switched to CXX and it was absolutely fine, no premature wear. Switched back to a different spool of 6lb Advance and it wore out within a day again. It appeared to fracture and weaken with very little use. Shame, it handled nicely in every other sense.

Tom I picked line test based on diameter the only way to really make a comparison. 14lb Advance is similar in dia to most 17lb test dia and 17lb test is comparable to 20 lb dia. Ordinarily I would never take 14 lb test to Mexico because of its trophy bass mix and underwater rock & wood.

Wow.  Experiences from great to horrible.  Had planned on giving this line a try.  Guess I will wait awhile.  See if quality control improves.  I've always like (and had good luck with) Sufix lines.

I used 8 lb Advance all season long on my Chatterbait Rod - and used it a lot all year.  
 

Was overall really impressed with it and had no fraying to speak of.  Didn’t drag it through a lot of rocks but a few.  Constantly pulling it through and around weed cover.  

 

Knots were great and I was really happy with casting distance (which was a concern with other lines I used for Chatterbaits in the past).

 

It was really was of the pleasant surprises equipment-wise of the year for me.

Spooled up with 14 lb on my baitcaster. I retrieve line between two fingers. Allows me to feel the condition of the line.

 

It felt "old" pretty quickly. The line felt like it twisted - something like the diameter of the line became inconsistant - the line lost it's shape. Wish I knew exactly what made the line feel stange to me, but that was enough to put it aside, and re-spool with my trustsed lines that never have an issue.

 

Also found line "memory coils" made it impossible to fish lightly weighted soft plastics. Like a long spring connected to my lure.

Hey now, there are wore lines than Suffix out there.  I remember the 14/40.  What a genius idea, an oval line that would "lay flatter" on the spool.  If only you could get a bait to never spin while you're retrieving it or spin during the cast, it would have worked perfectly.

 

My personal nemesis is P line.  I don't like anything about it, too many bad experiences with it.   I wouldn't use it for anything, not even handing picture frames.

Same here...almost.  I'd hang picture frames with it.    I've tried CX in 8# and 10#.  Handled very well.  BUT had the 8# break down in the spool (probably my fault as I was learning to use a baitcast reel).  However, that wasn't the case with the 10#.  Never backlashed it, but removed the reel from my rod after the first day of using it.  Line broke way too easy for 10#.  Was on vacation but luckily had taken a couple extra reels.

 

I do have some CXX to eventually try.  Other than memory, I don't recall reading any bad comments on it.

You fish a chatter bait with 8 lb line??? Maybe that’s why you catch all the big ones......

Ha! I wish.  I usually fish 10-12 lb line for Chatterbaits, but Advance is thicker so I drop down in size and I think it evens out pretty close...

I have two spools of Pline that I'm almost sure are bad spools.  I've use this line you years with no issues and all of a sudden the spools of 8 and 12 I have are breaking on the hooks set.  So unless I have two bad GLX rods I have two bad spools of line that I just bought.  

I actually have some Advance in the boat now.  Might as well give it a shot now.  

FWI my go to braid since it came out is the 832 from sufix.

I have a friend who has used 10 pound sufix advanced on spinning gear and likes it.

 

However, as this thread shows, people have had mixed results. I find sufix Siege so good I don't see a reason to change. 

 

Siege is amazing.
