Maybe some of you have seen what a Trailer Valet is..?? It allows me to push my boat up an incline and angle to just barely fit in my garage.  And also to pull it out without hitching to my vehicle so I don’t scrape the sides (or my wife’s nearby car).

Works great, only one problem... you really have to crank it with some strength to fit it like I have to.  And after 50 trips to the boat ramp this season (x2 each time in/out = 100 cranking sessions) I got the dreaded tendinitis aka “Trailer Valet elbow.”

Anyway, that was early Sept and I only trailered a couple more times this Fall.  In October I had “dry needling” done.  No improvement.  Now in November I’m trying some exercises and ice but not a lot of improvement there either.

Any favorite exercises or recovery methods that work?  Or does it just take 3-6 months to heal?

Stop doing the movements that irritated it to begin with. Take an anti-inflammatory if you can. Gently stretching a couple times a day will increase the bloodflow and shorten your healing time. I used a TENS unit on my elbow and it helped. I also used a heating pad for 20 minutes then iced it for 20 minutes, once a day for the first couple weeks.

So using those techniques, how long did it take to be over it?

I would suggest wrapping it when doing strenuous activities such as cranking.

There are many exercises yoy can do to help the area recover. I suggest googling it. For me my tennis elbow (as I have heard it referred to) takes 3-4 weeks to recover when I trigger it. It never full goes away. However it is manageable to the point of not noticing the effects.

I quit hurting after a couple weeks and quit thinking it totally after 5 weeks. I still stretch daily and before any activity and I haven't any futher pain or weakness.

It truly never goes away once you get it. I have it in my right elbow and wrist from Powerlifting. I've been fighting it since 2013.

This is the best thing I've found. It doesn't cure it, but it helps preventing it from getting worse. It can also mask the pain when it's bad.

But Ice, Ibuprofen and light stretches is about all you can do. besides from long periods of rest.

I like it too... but it wasn’t available when I bought mine 6 years ago for $299.  This new one is $4000 so I may have to save my pennies awhile..!

No doubt - I have a similar boat loading deal (tight quarters and an incline)  I can do the incline with the truck but do need to fit it in position by hand.  I use this and just push the boat

ABT Lures Trailer Jack Skate

- super easy on a smooth cement surface in the garage.

IME - the few times I had what you're describing - I had to let it heal - the more I used it (and felt that pain) the longer it took to heal.   A Body will usually do it - just have to let it.

Good Luck

My wife said I should try magnesium oil when my elbow was acting up

I would spray it on and rub it in.

I took a couple of months off and the pain was gone.

Now when it flares up a little I rub a little on it and it never seems to stay or get worse

probably all in my head but it works for me

Maybe worth a try.  FWIW I did also try CBD oil.  Didn’t help the elbow and I got the munchies...

Gotta do what you gotta do...

My Lund PVB with motor down and turned to the left, tongue swung open, and wiggled with Trailer Valet to achieve the perfect angle... leaves 3/4 inch room in back and 1/2 inch up front to get the garage door down.  It’s TIGHT..

...What we do to fish ?

I had it two years ago in my shoulder. A shot of cortisone in the shoulder helped 50-75%. A second shot about 6 weeks later cured the problem for me. Excessive push ups reps without a long slow build up phase is what caused my problem. As we age any repetitive exercises or repetitive motions without proper conditioning over an adequate amount of time can cause tendinitis. Just remember the turtle wins the race & so go slow & easy.

Very true.  My public service announcement for all who do push ups is to do them on your fists, not on a flat palm.  This I was told by the top hand surgeon at Mayo - about 2 weeks too late for me.  Flat palm push ups unduly stress the Scapholunate ligament resulting in a tear over time.  This is an unfixable ligament tear and why I can only fish left handed now, and will eventually have my wrist fused permanently.  Be careful with any exercise, especially those done repetitively.

I’ll second do things slowly.

What blew me away in physical therapy was when they told me that I could hurt my shoulder if I lifted a carton of milk the wrong way.

Its not how much you lift, but how you lift it.

The only OTC that works. Is DMSO, research it some. Learn it from some older lifters. Tried it and was very impressed. You can use it alone or mixed powders in with it and rub in the area with pain. DMSO will pull the powders through the skin. Tylenol and Ibuprofen work well. It will cont. To pull anything small enough through the skin till dry. So be careful with that. Some of the cheaper one stink pretty bad. Like fish oil and garlic mix.

So the issue is cranking

Can a longer handle be rigged to use on the crank??

Or use a power drill to do the cranking for you.

Power drill can work on the newer models, mine being 6 years old may have to be modified - but something I am Definitely exploring for next year.

All I can tell you is what I did. Take a full size bath towel, soak it in water that's as hot as you can tolerate, and WRAP the offending joint. Don't just set the hot, wet towel on the joint, but go around the whole joint. From what I was told, this balances the blood flow both down to and back from the joint. When the towel cools, what I do is put it in the microwave oven to re-heat it quickly. This (plus ibuprofen) works pretty well for me.

And yes, no matter what you do, it's gonna take time. Good luck.   jj

For me, I had to stop making long-distance casts (hard casts), and wear a forearm band every time I went fishing....on both arms. THEN, took the winter off from fishing entirely.

That was a year ago.

Even then, I still need to wear the arm bands every now and then.  But for the most part, it's gone now.

I think I need to invest in an arm band...

.. and I might need to also stop the repetitive motion of continually patting myself on the back (middle child, no one else did ;)
