Crazy. I almost wonder if the big one was also going for the lure and just so happened to get the bass in the process. They're lucky he spit him out and didn't choke on it.

If that was an accident, that big bass sure took its time shaking the little bass back out.  They never seem to take that long when they have one of my topwaters in their mouth.

Bass, to me, seem to be very competitive and absolutely hate other predators -- even their own species.  They're also definitely cannibalistic and the only double I've ever caught was on a stick worm of all things.  The bigger bass hit the smaller bass so hard it knocked my hook through the side of little dudes mouth, just threading the line through him.  Then she got foul hooked in the struggle.  That was a confusing hookup.  Tick - hookset - WHAM - dead weight.  Drug in two bass with one hook.

More on topic, those are decent looking cranks.  I may have to check them out, I like that they come with VMCs stock and that they have a decent amount of weight to them despite being silent.

Competitive is one word for it, greedy and jealous are a couple more words that describe how they act when they see another fish getting something to eat. They can be triggered to eat out of jealousy.

The closest I ever came to getting a double was with a lipless crankbait. I hooked a little LM about 8" long and almost had it all the way to the bank when I saw a LM about 3 pounds come up and try to steal the lipless crankbait away from the smaller fish. For a couple seconds they were both hooked, then the smaller one got away and I landed the 3 pounder. I was standing up on a high bank about 5 feet over the water, so I could see the whole thing real clear. It was awesome. For that couple seconds they were both hooked, I thought my rod would break. I've caught much larger fish, but those two being on the same hook was a huge jerk, like I'd hooked onto a monster.

Well, I think they were both going for the bait. Once the big bass had the other one in it's mouth, it probably figured "this one will do". Once it realized it was to big to swallow, it released the other one.

I had a big bass eat a small bass I was reeling in on a popper once and ended up landing the fish.

I wouldn't get too caught up about the bait though. I use to drag baits across the front of the glass when I worked at Cabela's and the bass would chase them all over, won some sales competitions doing it. Fact of the matter, I did the same with big bank sinkers too, and they chased them just as hard as they did the crankbaits. They're conditioned to eat whatever is tossed into the tank as fast as possible because of the competition.
