I know the feeling of not having Open Water for long periods of time, here in NY/NJ we get this really weird period of cold weather after January in the upper 30s/40s but it causes very thin ice on our ponds and lakes, it'll probably be like this until mid March, even in April we can still get temperatures in the low 40s and it honestly makes the fishing miserable, the bass will all of a sudden get into pre spawn mode if there's 55+ weather for a day or two and then the second it hits below 50 they go right back to winter mode. I just want those mid summer mornings on the lake back hahahahahaha Long live winter! (Dodges object hurled at me)....... fish bite really good when it’s cold here. It’s hot enough to sweat through your skivvies before sunrise in midsummer Quote

Winter means your standing on top of the lake, not on top of a boat in the lake. 1 Quote

Lived in Cape May for most of it - and I loved it. Didn't do much sweet water fishing but did Striper fish my Arse off ! A-Jay 1 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted February 17, 2020 Global Moderator Posted February 17, 2020 Last weekend we set tip ups on our lake, the ice was around 4” thick. We set some again yesterday and it was 6”. The thickness is going in the wrong direction for my liking. This time last year we were close to a foot thick so I’ll take what we have now. 1 Quote

Super Cold here this morning - well below zero. Wind was a little brutal. And wait for it - getting half a foot of snow starting any minute now . . . A-Jay 1 Quote

If I've learned anything the past 13 years, it's that Pure Michigan, especially the snow belt area, has unique & unpredictable weather patterns, that change every year. Season's as we know them - don't really exist. There is virtually no 'typical' spring & fall weather; unless we a ready to count a week or ten days it. It's more like the No snow season and the Snow season because we go from winter to summer and from summer to winter. And I have 'cold weather gear' in my rig almost ALL YEAR ROUND ! WTH ! Tom Cold - still full on winter here. It was -12 without the windchill last night. Brought the dogs in the house, first time this winter. Snowing now, we have a foot or so on the ground, more in drift areas. My count down to projected open water is still 57 days away. And while a lot can change in almost two months -- This recent & current weather deal is not making the wait seem any shorter . . . A-Jay Quote

Super User J Francho Posted February 20, 2020 Super User Posted February 20, 2020 It wasn't clear if it was a suicide or accident. Regarding the former, mental illness, left untreated is often deadly. Sad end. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted February 20, 2020 Super User Posted February 20, 2020 That story will probably keep me awake tonight. Thanks @TnRiver46 ?. I have kind of a phobia with dams. I sometimes fish below them even though it's a little scary. I stay away from the top side. I just feel like I could fall in and get sucked through at any moment. I'm sure it would be very dangerous to be anywhere near those dams right now with all the flooding. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 20, 2020 Super User Posted February 20, 2020 You probably don't want to hear the story of not being able to start the big motor during a TX on Erie. We were in the Niagara River, and moving pretty quickly towards the falls. The falls were around 8 miles away, but it was a pucker moment. We figured worse case, we would have to beach in the slack on the Canadian side, and call customs. Luckily, she started up eventually, and we got the heck up outta there. I've never fished the upper river again, lol. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 22, 2020 Author Super User Posted February 22, 2020 While my projected open water date is a mere 53 Days away, and a lot can change between now & then, considering how much of winter we're still experiencing here and how much winter there is still on the ground, I'm not feeling very optimistic. Even if by some miraculous turn of events, there is open water, access to these places may be a problem. Big Snow, pond sized snow melt at the ramps and big mud is always a concern early on, and this time around it's setting up to be very detrimental to the end game . . . . . I can foresee another very short pre-spawn period in the works. Booo A-Jay 1 Quote
