Probably wouldn't help if I said I was more of a Himalayan Salt Guy.  61gEz0DUxFL._SL1100_.jpg

Last year I believe half of one of our local lakes thawed out before my oldest's birthday, 4/14. I forget the exact date. Unfortunately it's the shallow half and the majority of the fish were still deep, but we still tried anyway.

I would be happy for the same thing this year, as long as the rest of the year isn't so tough to catch them :)

Oh I’m with ya A-Jay! The long range forecast looks promising for keeping ice on the lakes to a minimum. I’m liking this, I hope it continues this past.

Dude, how can it be that much longer than either @A-Jayor myself as you're south of both of us. Unless your legal season starts later.

78 Days and counting.

It's painful. Thankfully we target other species starting in April. Legal season starts 4th started in June. Esox is a month earlier.

Well, we're actually talking open water...I can't target Bass until 10 May - so 104 days for that. So from open-water until then, target crappie and test/tweak the canoe mods.

Ohhh, ice out up here could be late March beginning of April. Crappie would be a good species to target, we've accidentally caught them on 2.8s on jighead.

Thankfully they changed our bass season to catch and release all year long. This was a few years ago they changed it, until then catch and release was I believe the third Saturday in April and catch and keep (which I don’t do) is the third Saturday in May.

We still have a closed season. LMB closes 23 Feb, opens for C&R on 10 May, opens for keepers 24 May. SMB closed for keepers on 8 Sept, open for C&R until 23 Feb, opens again same as LMB.

The MI walleye opener is still well after usual open water.   Still, I will always catch (and immediately release) more and bigger walleye as by-catch fishing for smb during those 3 weeks or so, than the rest of the entire season combined.

And these fish are always in super shallow.

Can't even target Walleye or Pike until 10 May once the season closes on 23 Feb...yep, everything except panfish closes then and doesn't open until Mother's Day Weekend.

That’s a mighty fine walleye! Did you get that on Menderchuck? PB? You get a weight on that big girl?

Thanks -

Didn't measure or weigh this one.

Might have gone 5lb and some change I'd guess ?

PB came from Lake Eire  and was also by catch interestingly enough.

9 lbs

This weekend the lakes had1.5' of snow on top of 6" of slush on top of 1' of ice. Lets just say the tipups werent set too far from the boat launch since travel was difficult.

Is there a way to go back and see what their 3 month outlook was say, 3 months ago, or do they delete it if they’re off never to be seen again?

I am of the opinion that most every entity that includes NWS as part of their deal,

after their 'prediction' there seems less concern with the actual out come.

 I'd like to submit exhibit A ~

"Latest indications suggest the possibility of below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation for the Great Lakes region for January through March of 2020. This pattern would mean cold and snowy conditions for Northern Michigan."

Is there another Michigan some where - One we're not aware of ?

Now that’s a breath of fresh air! 73 days doesn’t seem that bad. It’s inevitable that this mild weather we’re experiencing will last forever, but it’ll be easier to deal with when winter actually shows up knowing open water isn’t too far away.

And of course February had to be doing the leap year.
