RyneB Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 I have a bucket list when it comes to bass fishing. Next on my list is catching giants on swimbaits. Here in Illinois, I'm very limited on the size of the bass. I've caught a couple 7s, one 8, and countless 5s. But I want a double digit on a swimbait. Where would be my best chance for that? California? Mexico? When i mean swimbait, I'm talking 10 inch hudds,8 inch hand pours, deps 250s. Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 11, 2019 Super User Posted November 11, 2019 Mexico; Baccarat or El Salto. California stopped stocking hatchary raised rainbow trout for several years and the giant bass population cashed as a result. The giant bass population is s l o w l y recovering and the number of swimbait anglers has more then doubled. Tom 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted November 11, 2019 Super User Posted November 11, 2019 Giants on swimbaits you say ? Past few years the swimbait bite on Lake Baccarac in Mexico has been stellar ~ Numbers of giants including 7's, 8's, 9's, 10's, 11's & a 12 lb Beast, have been caught. We stay at Lake Baccarac Lodge which is IMO the Best in Bass. Here's some more info as well as posts, Pics & a bit of video from the past two trips. When it comes to Big Bass - This place is completely Un-Real ! A-Jay 2 Quote
RyneB Posted November 11, 2019 Author Posted November 11, 2019 I have a buddy you wants me to go to Baccarac with him in March. But not sure I can swing that financially this go around. Certainly seems like that's the spot though. Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted November 11, 2019 Super User Posted November 11, 2019 I agree with the Mexico recommendations, but if it's not in the budget this time around it would be tough to beat a week in Northern California. You could fly into Sacramento and be able to fish New Melones (copied in an article link and some swimbait vids on the lake below if you're interested in watching some successful swimbait catches), Clear Lake, the Delta, and/or Berryessa. All of those have DD's willing to hit large swimbaits and plenty do every year (just not for me yet). Best of luck wherever you end up going... can't really lose on a trip like that! https://www.bassmaster.com/tips/so-you-want-catch-trophy-bass 1 Quote

Smokinal Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 How safe do you gys think Mexico is right now? Baccarac is on my bucket but, man, not sure I want to get confused with someone else down there.... Quote

I live in Michigan for instance - Much of Detroit is, IMO - 'not safe'. But it's 4 hours south of me - has virtually no bearing on my 'safety' at home. Mexico is a Big Country . . . . . The Lodge we stay & fish from is 2 minutes from the lake and sits on the top of a mountain, 4 hours from "Detroit". A-Jay 2 Quote
TBAG Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 Wow, Baccarac looks amazing. That's on my list for next year. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 14, 2019 Super User Posted November 14, 2019 For the record the biggest bass catch documented on video that I am aware of belongs to Butch Brown @ 19.3 lbs at Castiac lagoon on a Hudd. When California stopped planting trout in SoCal the giant bass population crashed. Tom Quote
