Super User Mobasser Posted November 7, 2019 Super User Posted November 7, 2019 I just picked up several(12) bags of these grubs in assorted colors, for a very good price. Is anyone still using them anymore. I use to catch a fair number of bass just rigging with a ball head jig, slow swimming, or snapping them up, and getting most hits on the fall. Don't hear about them too much anymore 3 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 7, 2019 Super User Posted November 7, 2019 Mann's Sting Ray grubs and worms were intended for salt water and made from a tougher (stiffer) soft plastic then his Jelly worms and also had a larger spade tail. I remember using the lime and grape grubs and worms with a fire red tail that worked good back in the day. Tom 4 Quote
waymont Posted November 8, 2019 Posted November 8, 2019 I use them pretty regularly for bass. I use them in the 3" size as a trailer on finesse jigs when I want a super compact profile. I will also use them on a 1/16 or 1/8oz ball head jig for smallmouth. I have a 100 pack of white 4" that are used for pike and walleye on a 1/4oz ballhead. They are very durable and have a unique action. 1 Quote
padon Posted November 8, 2019 Posted November 8, 2019 You don't hear about them much anymore but they are still DYNAMITE on cool and.cold water bass. We fish the smoke or avocado color on an 1/8-1/4 ounce ball head jig and hammer fish in late fall ,winter ,early spring.if your around heavy cover fish then on one of the Ned heads with the little wire weedgaurd.I love the fact that a lot of people don't use them anymore, fish don't see them much. 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 8, 2019 Global Moderator Posted November 8, 2019 Haven't seen them anywhere for a long time but used to catch a lot of fish on them. That gliding, darting action would really catch them sometimes. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted November 8, 2019 Super User Posted November 8, 2019 I haven't seen any of those in a long while either. My first thought is that they would make great Ned rig baits fished on a 1/16 oz mushroom head jig. 4 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted November 8, 2019 Super User Posted November 8, 2019 The 3" on a 1/8oz football head is killer for cold water smallmouth!!!! 2 Quote

They do, they have a really cool gliding fall on light jig heads. They wont stand up, but they definitely catch a lot of fish. Quote
GANGGREEN Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 Curious how most of you rig them, with the hook inline with the spade tail or at a 90 degree angle, aka flat. Quote
detroit1 Posted November 11, 2019 Posted November 11, 2019 Inline on a bladed jig would also be a use... Quote
Logan S Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 Avocado Stingray grub on a ballhead jighead has been a winter fishing staple on the Potomac forever. 4 Quote
Will Wetline Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 I've still got about 3 dozen in a bag in the back of a closet. A 3" Stingray grub rigged flat on an 1/8 oz. ball jig was a go-to for me in the mid to late 70s. No doubt they would still work. This oldie-but-goodie came to mind when I first saw Missile Baits Ned Bomb Worm. Ha! 2 Quote
Super User Raul Posted November 12, 2019 Super User Posted November 12, 2019 I refuse to answer to this question. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 I was about to say as Logan S did that the 3' avocado Stingray fished on a 1/8 or 1/4 ball head jig has been a winter favorite in the late fall/winter for the 19 years I have been on the Tidal Potomac river. Outside the family of Potomac anglers this the first time I have ever read a discussion on the bait. It sure works for us. 2 Quote
Gene Bass Posted December 16, 2022 Posted December 16, 2022 I have yet to use these. But, a good old fishermen neighbor of mine gave me some to try. He said he used to kill the fish in the bay with them. And that they are some of the best baits to use. The packs he gave me came with some big heads and he said to spray some WD/40 on them. I believe he said to jig them with a popping cork. He has a lot of info and said a lot of things so I might have mixed some of the techniques up here. I’ll have to have him refresh me before I try. Super User scaleface Posted December 16, 2022 Super User Posted December 16, 2022 I remember having a pack that came with red jig heads but I dont remember using them . Quote

Suggest using a different attractant like Mega Strike in lieu of WD-40 that isn’t fish oil it’s a solvent! Tom 3 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted December 16, 2022 Super User Posted December 16, 2022 That used to be the only grub we could get and it was only green. It was a great bait on Bull Shoals for smallmouth. I haven’t had any since I started making my own plastics. Quote
mcipinkie Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 We used them on the Coosa River 50 years ago. Fished them just like that new thing they call a Ned rig. 1 Quote
Smells like fish Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 I have an unopened pack of them in white that looks like it came from the 1970’s. I’m letting them age til the right time ? 1 1 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted December 17, 2022 Super User Posted December 17, 2022 Bought some last year to try out for winter fishing. Haven't used them since they were on the back of a beetle spin. Allen Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted December 17, 2022 Author Super User Posted December 17, 2022 For anyone interested, these are still available on Mann's web site. They list 4 colors, all 3" size. I'm not sure if they're the same harder plastic as the old ones. It looks like it would work well as a Ned rig bait. I'll just use a ball head jig. I remember these being popular when I started in the early 80s. They're all but forgotten around my area now. A good time to bring them back. Quote
GRiver Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 Anybody got some pics of rigging them flat? I’m not familiar with that. Quote
