5/0 Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 Just got this reel today and want to pair it with a rod I currently own to get the best benefit from the reels capabilities. I was thinking of a 10 yr. old GLoomis GLX MBR783 that would be used for light-med jigs and worms, underspins, keel weighted swimbaits, spinnerbaits, or crankbaits depending on the water fished. Would this rod fit the bill? Thanks....Joe Quote
DanielG Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 Well, I've got the reel and love it. I've never used that rod but I do have a Dobyn's Champion that is also MHF but it's 7.3 and glass. I can tell you that it's wonderful for cranks and such. Yours is 6.6 right? Quote

Yes the Loomis is a 6’6”. I recently got a Dobyns Champion 705 MH/MF that I was going to use as an all around crank bait rod. It will be paired with a Fuego CT. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted November 7, 2019 Super User Posted November 7, 2019 I have the 783GLX and the Curado DC. They are not paired together but I don't see why they wouldn't be great together. I the DC paired with a St. Croix Legend Glass 7'4'' M Mod and the 783GLX has a Shimano Core on it. IMHO, the 783GLX is one the best rods ever made. I have yet to find it's equal. Quote
Junger Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 For me, the DC excels at two things, bombing lures and casting wind/air resistant type baits (like spinner baits). For lighter lures, or precision casting, I usually have Daiwa SV reels on those rods. But, the DC should have no issues on the rod and lures you're going to throw. Quote
Derek1 Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 I have it on a 705 cb. I think it’s great on any moving bait rod for chucking and winding. Quote
Dens228 Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 I have mine on a Megabass Flatside Special. I use it for cranks and jerksbaits. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted November 7, 2019 Super User Posted November 7, 2019 I had mine on a 6'10 MH Zodias and used it for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. It worked great for those applications especially since it is windy 90% of the time here in Oklahoma. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted November 7, 2019 Super User Posted November 7, 2019 I have one of the Curado DC reels and I think that it is better suited for reaction baits. Currently I use a 6'8" Fenwick AETOS rod, it has a MH rating but it is tippy enough to get some distance with spinner baits. I'm getting a little more distance with the spinner baits that I usually throw ( 1/2 oz) compared to the reels I used to throw the same bait with. (either a Calcutta 250 TEGT or a Curado D ). A few weeks ago I got down to Truman Lake and tied on a 3/4 oz spinner bait and that rod & reel combo made that bait fly. I could cast slightly less than half the spool out - fairly shallow water and I was getting bit 100 feet or more from the boat. Enough of a difference that I'm rethinking using heavier spinner baits more often. Quote
