Bassin' Brad Posted October 29, 2019 Posted October 29, 2019 I know we all see "how things are today" with people all around us who are rude and don't seem to care. I live in a town of 45,000 -60,000 people where rude, inconsiderate, and distracted drivers are the norm (although nothing like that time I visited D.C.) I have had several things lately that let me know that there's still people out there that want to help. 6 months or so back I was driving one of our company trucks and it broke down while I was sitting in an intersection. This is a heavy 1 ton dually and I knew that I was up the creek. After I got out and started trying to push it people started jumping out of their vehicles to help me. Two or three guys and a young woman helped me get it off the road. 2 weeks ago my wife and I was in Walmart shopping when I realized that for the 1st time in the 5 years I've owned my truck I locked my keys inside. She stayed inside and shopped while I went outside and peered through the glass at my keys, when I guy walks by me and tells me that he has stuff out in his semi truck that will unlock it. So he stays and helps me until we unlock it and he refused to let me pay him instead telling me to pass it on. Well this morning I see a guy stopped in an intersection. His truck dies while he was trying to make a right hand turn. I pull into a parking lot and go over to help. He says he don't think we can push it ourselves when another guy parks and walks over and together we push it down the road into a parking lot. Good to know there is still people who are ready to lend a hand. I want to be one of those people. 8 Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted October 29, 2019 Super User Posted October 29, 2019 Yes, there are plenty of good people left in this world. The thing about it is, just like the news, people only want to point out the bad instead of the good. It's rare to read stories that say, "I ordered a pizza and it was perfect" instead we hear "I will never go back to so and so restaurant because the service was terrible and the food was awful". 3 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted October 29, 2019 Global Moderator Posted October 29, 2019 There’s still plenty of good around. I’ve helped push a few vehicles before too. A guy once stopped in a complete down pour to help me load a canoe on top of an SUV I used to have. It blew off when a sudden storm blew in and strait line winds destroyed my straps. The guy was drenched (as was I) but he still stopped and wouldn’t let me pay him or anything. Like @jbsoonerfan said good stories “aren’t newsworthy” which is why most times it’s the last 30 seconds of the news broadcast. 1 Quote

Besides, each of these broadcasts would be much truer represented if they chose to correctly identify it for what it is - People acting badly, making ridiculous decisions and things that we all hope & believe happen to 'other people'. I'll occasionally watch the local news, as a reminder of who & what's living around me. A-Jay 4 Quote
OCdockskipper Posted October 29, 2019 Posted October 29, 2019 Watching the news doesn t cause a problem for me because I am in different people's homes every day. My daily experience is that most people are good and honest while some aren't. I believe the percentage of the latter is higher in more populated areas, but that is based on my experiences, not any actual data. A good thing about being exposed to both is that you learn how to spot each type quickly. 1 Quote

He seemed like the wise grandfather. You probably would have voted for him had he run for something. Similar for the other network news anchors. 1 1 Quote

Super User Jrob78 Posted October 30, 2019 Super User Posted October 30, 2019 I run into way more nice, helpful people in my daily life than I do a-holes and I live in one of the biggest cities in the country, albeit in the south. Like someone else mentioned, we hear more about the bad stuff than we do the good. If any of you are on Reddit check out a sub called r/humansbeingbros, it will make you feel a little better about humanity. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 31, 2019 Global Moderator Posted October 31, 2019 Thankfully, I meet a lot of good people on the water. It's easy to get jaded dealing with most of the people I do on a daily basis and sometimes even worse if I watch the news. Nothing like the feeling of being hated by people you've never met because of the job you do, especially when that job is doing something to keep them safe. 4 Quote

Super User Mobasser Posted November 12, 2019 Super User Posted November 12, 2019 Good story BassnBrad. I always try to help other folks when I can. I've had times in my life when I needed some help too. And like my dad taught us, what goes around comes around.Treat folks with respect, and help them out if you can. Sometimes, a small thing can make a HUGE difference in another person's life 1 Quote
Fishingmickey Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 Speaking of random acts of kindness/help. Three fisherman on a bay/flats style Ranger were along my kayak return travel path. I had observed where they were fishing and said "Hihowsitgoinghavinganyluck" as I went around them out on the water. We exchanged similar info. Fishing was tough under bluebird skies etc, etc. Back at the boat ramp about a hour or so later. I was pulling out my kayak. This was Saturday evening at the local lake. They were having problems with the bunks on their trailer and had backed their boat off and tied up to the dock. I noticed that they were using a multitool-plierthingy trying to tighten bunk position bolts. The three of them were standing together at the end of the trailer. It appeared it wasn't going well. I spoke up and asked do you need any tools? (My vehicle is known to my sweetie as a Swiss army vehicle because I have everything in it). They replied do you have a phillips screwdriver? I asked what size. They said medium. I brought over a #2 & #3. It was the three that was needed for the replacement locknut & 1/4-20 machine screw. I saw the multitool/hammerhead & pliers thingy they were trying to hold and run the locknut down 2" of exposed threads in a very tight location and said I'll be right back. I grabbed my socket set and boxed end wrench set proceeded to get them fixed up. Then I checked the other three angle positioning bolts and got them tightened up. Two of the other three were very loose. It felt good to reach out and them fixed up. FM On 11/3/2019 at 4:15 PM, N Florida Mike said: And I was the remote! Bet you’re too young to remember that! We should create a news channel calling people out for who they are, and we should act or react accordingly. Good people get good karma and bad people get hung out to dry. Quote
