Well, my faith in people's honesty has taken a hit. I uncovered my boat to find my bow mounted DI Humminbird missing. :censored:  Just the display, the cables weren't cut as the bracket has a quick release. I've been living here 40+ years and most of my neighbors have, too. My boat stays covered in my drive next to my house when not in use, so I suspect one of the locals.

The downside is the deductable on my home owners insurance is more than the unit cost, so I'll be looking to replace it come spring. I had been considering doing so, but now I'm forced to. Whatever unit I end up with, I guarantee you that it and my console one will be coming in the house after every outing.

That totally sucks, man. I can't imagine what going through your head right now.

I'm in a neighborhood that's seen 2 serious crimes and only a dozen minor crimes in the 33 years I've lived here.

Stating that - I put the canoe in the garage and lock the door...maybe it's time to invest in at least a lockable storage shed that'll fit the boat?

Something like this leaves a sour feeling. It's more than the lost item, it's the idea of the violation of someone snatching it that's worse. That someone would do that to you. Sometimes if someone is in need of something (something else of course not a hummingbird) I might just give it to them. Other than that I want to be waiting around the corner with a baseball bat.

Sucks...

always remove the sonar units when trailering my boats. The road vibrations alone are damaging to sonar units, the fact someone could steal them is a factor when stopping to eat on the trip home.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune, out if sight out of mind, we live in a world of both good and dishonest folks.

Man, that sucks. I HATE thieves. Just a shot in the dark, but check your local offer and Craig’s list pages. It could be there. A thief got into my daughters car and stole her backpack. The thief put it on offer up and I almost got it back. I would have pounded him to pieces and kicked his arse and taken it back but someone bought it. Ding dang tweakers.

I would think local as well.  I can recall as a kid my Dad beating a guy in horse shoes. The guy was so ticked, we caught him breaking into my Dad's fishing shed.  He was trying to steal his better fishing gear and his tackle box to make up for the cash he lost.  I knew him since I was born.  We would have never suspected.  It was a pretty valuable lesson for everyone, including the guy that went to jail for being a sore loser.

That sucks. Be sure to take any and all valuables out of your boat, cuz now they know anything left in there is for the taking..And yes, check all local craigs list ads, even the ones in the general forum, and sporting goods, only because they think you won't look there. Thieves are scum of the earth.

Sorry to hear this. I've never had any fishing gear stolen, but had a nice air compressor taken from a job I was on. That was 10yrs ago, and I still get mad when I think about it. It's still the same- a thief is a thief. I have no tolerance for them at all

Pappa, I have done two things to protect the items on my boat while it sits in my field:

1.  Remove all electronics and all other items, leaving nothing in the boat other than the anchor.

2.  I put a baby monitor in the boat with the receiver in my man cave to hear if anyone is on the boat.

Try the baby monitor. You can get them at Walmart.

So far, so good.

I have a buddy, who like me, has their boat on a slip for the Summer and uses a trail-cam to watch his boat.  It won't stop a thief, but will help put one in jail.  Sorry for your loss

I have had a lot of my outdoor gear stolen by relatives and their friends. And a lot of other stuff. To the point that I can’t be specific or I start getting mad.On one hand it’s kind of my fault for not keeping it under lock and key. But then I think - I really shouldn’t have to with family members. And I know who they are and they know I know- and could care less.Because there is no evidence. Everything is pawned or sold. I did get my chainsaw back after noticing it was gone- stolen and pawned by a family “ friend “ I confronted him, he did not confess- but The police found it with his name on it at the local pawn shop. I pressed charges - he got 8 months in jail for it, got out and almost immediately had an overdose of heroin and died. There will be a special place in hell for drug dealers I’m convinced, and that drugs probably causes most of the crime and specifically, thefts. When I was growing up people stole something because they wanted it. Now they steal to sell it and get drugs.

And a lot of people consider drug usage a "victimless crime".

That's terrible buddy. Sorry to hear about that.

Dollars to donuts it was a junky looking for an expensive item to grab quickly and turn around for a quick buck at a local pawn shop. Check around, maybe it'll turn up.

We have had quite a few young people here on our local bass fishing scene end up with their names in the news for drug related charges. It makes me nervous that when our guard is down in the parking lot at a tournament, that guys will return to their boats to find stuff missing. I have taken a policy of asking these people to politely not come anymore for such reasons.

That sucks man.  I remember once at a public launch, we came back from a day of fishing only to find that someone had to stolen the tires off our trailer.  That complicated the rest of the day.

That's about as messed up a story as I have read in a long time. I can count the amount of people I trust in this world on 1 hand minus a few fingers. Stories like this are the reasons why.

In my area there have been a rash of car break ins. The thieves are targeting cars in hiking trail parking lots. They sit and watch folks get out of their cars and break in a few minutes after they leave knowing they shouldn't be back for awhile.

Leave nothing you don't want stolen outside. Leave nothing visible in your car when parking it. Lock all your doors. Don't make it easy for the thieves and they will pass up your car or house for the next one.

i would rather drop it in the lake than have it stolen, at least that way you paid the fish gods, this way you get nothing out of it ?

roadwarrior, I don't agree. People have a choice to make. If they choose drugs, they pay the price.
