Currado dc is great for moving baits. Effortless distance.

I can ditto that.

I use a Johnny Morris with 5 something  to 1 gear ratio . It cost me 100 dollars  on sale . No complaints and it retrieves big deep divers easily .

For me it's a close tie between the Curado DC and the Abu Garcia Revo Winch.  If I was picking again, I would get the DC as a all around use reel and the Winch for just crankbaits.  The DC feels smoother and casts great but the Winch has more power for deeper cranks and it does a great job of slowing the bait down before it hits the water.

Second vote for the Revo Winch. It's made for cranking. It's 5.4:1 with 22" IPT.

Another reel to look at is the Lews BB1. It's 5.1:1 with 21" IPT. Some people really love it and it's only $160

I haven't tried the new Revos, but most of my baitcasters were Abus until the Gen3 Revos came out.  I still have a couple of them running, a Premier and a SX, but after the luck I had with the Gen3s, I am reluctant to go back.  That said, it's getting harder and harder to find a reel with a slow retrieve.  So if there's 2 people on this forum saying Abu Winches are their go-to, they're probably worth considering.  I have 2 cranking outfits with 6:1 reels, and I wish both of them were slower.  For me, I like the BB1s for cranking.  I don't necessarily want them for everything else, but when you're cranking, that would be my choice.

I agree there just are not a lot of 5 speed options anymore. All the manufacturers are pushing faster reels and that's what everyone is buying. I also still like slower reels for cranking. I wish Shimano still made a 5 speed low profile reel. I also use a Calcutta 200d, but that is a round reel and out of the OP's price range. A lot of people like a 6 speed and there are tons of options available.

Another slow speed reel I found was the Bass Pro Qualifier 2 in a 5.6:1 with a 23" ipt for $100. I think those are also made in Korean in the same Doyo factory where they make Abu Garcia and Lew's reels.

@Crankin4Bass, do you have any firsthand experience with that BPS reel?

No. Sorry I haven't used that reel. I just mentioned it as an option for anyone reading this thread looking for a more affordable reel. I think there probably are lot of people on here that have used them. Hopefully they can chime in with some firsthand experience.

They do. The JDM Bantam Mgl is available in 5.5

What about the Shimano Cardiff 200a? That's got 24" per turn retrieve. It's simple, fairly strong and $120.  jj

Anything with the Daiwa name on it.  Doesn't take anything near $300 to get a very good reel.  One that casts a variety of lure weights with little or no adjustment between them.

My first crank bait reel was a black Ambassaduer 5000C High Speed with 5.3:1 ratio back in '68.

I didn't know it was a crank bait reel or what a crank bait was back then, I used the reel for deep diving plugs like Bomber and Mudbug 500's. Still have that reel.

You can cast and retrieve a crank bait with nearly any bait casting reel. Like swimbaits the issue is line capacity that stays within a few feet IPT during the retreive and a pace that the lure performs best at, without wearing you out.

What crank baits do you plan to use? Size and depth is what I am looking for.

First :welcome: to the forum.  Quite a few knowledgeable people here.  Afraid I can't help with the newer reels.  I see the Tournament MB comes in a 5.6 ratio.  I like the 7.5 one I have.  I assume you won't want anything faster than the low to mid 6s.  Now that I have a couple dedicated crankbait rods I am using older Daiwa reels in 5.7 and 5.8 ratios.  I don't fish deep crankbaits.

Not a lot of reels below 6:1 being offered today.  Much larger choice in the 6 ratios.  As already stated, reels are getting faster and faster as that seems to be what people want.

BTW Tom, thanks for the tip on the Cardiff. The more I talk to people who have them, the more impressed I am. It was just under my radar, but it'll be my next reel.  ?   jj

Currently I use a Shimano Calcutta TEGT for my deeper diving crank bait set up.  On my other deeper diving set up I use an older Curado D ( a wider spool version of the Curado, no longer available, marketed in the early 2000's. )

I'm pretty sure that the TEGT isn't available any more either.

If you're going to do a lot of cranking, get a good reel.

Deep cranks can put a lot of stress on the reel.

If you're not going to crank that much, you can get by with something cheaper.

Whatever you get, a lower gear ratio is usually better.
