Shockwave Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 I've been using Daiwa Tatulas, Tatula Type-Rs, SVs for the last 4 years and this season, I started having an issue where the mag-force brake dial turns while in my palm. I typically have it set at about 8. After an hour of casting, I'll notice that I'm not getting the distance I'm used to getting so I'll look at the brake dial and it'll be cranked up to 16 or so. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, how did you get around it? Before this started happening, I loved these reels but it annoys me to death when I notice that my distance has decreased. Quote

Fishin Dad Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 I noticed this as well. More this year than last. I just finally figured out what was happening this year too. I am now just more aware of it, and adjust as necessary. I will never switch to a reel where I have to remove a side plate to adjust it however. That is a "reel" pain in the rump. Quote

I'm wondering if I'm gripping the reel too tight or something? Have you figured out a way to no longer inadvertently turn the dial? Quote

Does anyone else have this problem? If so, how did you get around it? Not with the Tats, but with other Daiwa reels. I solved it by spooling up my internally adjustable 6 pin centrifugal brake reels. So far the Fuegos haven't done it, but we'll see. Quote

Tim Kelly Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 I have the same problem. Have slightly modified how I hold the reel which helps, but it's annoying. If they made the side plates like the Steez the issue wouldn't exist. Daft. I believe some Shimanos have a similar problem with the side plate release button being exactly where your fingers want to be, so they can pop off when you're using them. Designers eh? Quote

I must've tweaked how I was holding it in order for this issue to surface so I'll have to find something that's comfortable. I REALLY don't wanna dump them since other than this issue, I love them!! I do have a 13 Fishing Inception that I got as a gift and I will say that it palms really well for me so I don't mind that reel either. Quote

I then figured out with certain techniques and sometimes fighting fish, my hand would catch the dial. Slightly annoying, but I am just more aware now and it has been better. I do wish they could figure something out, but not a deal breaker for me. Quote

Super User FishTank Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 I had the same issue with a Zillion years ago. I cut a really thin rubber washer and placed it under the screw cap. It took a little trial and error and some luck but it worked for a at home fix. Quote
LonnieP Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 Both my CT’s and Sv’s brake dials will turn if the rod gets laid sideways on the deck but has never happened while fishing. My new Tatula 100 is the opposite, sometimes the brake dial on it is a PITA to turn. Quote

There probably are tapes that won't leave a gummy deposit. I have some translucent UV resistant tape that I would use. Heavy duty packaging tape probably will work, too. 1 Quote

Super User iabass8 Posted October 26, 2019 Super User Posted October 26, 2019 Put the dial all the way to max. Remove side plate Remove bearing retainer, bearing, and shims. Unscrew the Phillips head and remove the mag brake assembly. Remove the clip that holds the dial flush /w the side plate. Add extra shim to brake dial stem. Reassemble in reverse. This will tighten the brake dial and make it more difficult to move back and forth. 4 Quote

Me neither..all my casting reels are Fuego CT's. They stay put. I bought a Shimano SLX this summer....hated having to open the side to set brakes.
