Jared Kiley Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 Just purchased a Daiwa Zillion SV TW, paired to a Loomis med/heavy rod. I'm not a novice fisher and not my first bait casting reel but this one has me stumped thinking I'm missing a setting or dial someplace. First, the casting distance is poor using light to medium casting power. However, if I let it rip with a bomb style cast, the spool will almost jerk to a stop mid flight about 20 yards out and drop the lure hard into the water. It's an abrupt clunk almost as if you engaged the handle during lure flight. After the lure hits the water, you can still pull out line so it's not like it's back lashed or knotted up. Another way to describe would be like a centrifical clutch engaging, but rather than slowing the spool gradually it shoves a pin into and it just stops it from spinning. It only does this when you really try to launch a cast. I have set spool side to side tension so that there is barely any lateral movement in the spool, as instructed in the Manual. I tried all brake settings without any change. Is this defective or is this some setting I'm missing? Thank you in advance! First post here but long time reader Quote
Super User FishTank Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 I had the same issue with the original Zillion but it occurred several years after I purchased. I eventually sold it (I did let the buyer know just in case). I took the whole thing apart and rebuilt it and it still did the same thing. I believe the spring on the clutch was bad. The attached image shows what I thought it was at the time I took it apart. If you can, I would either return it or send it to Daiwa for service. Quote

I'm guessing that your braid is digging into itself and this is your issue, not the reels fault. What pound test and brand are you using? If you have some cheap 12-15 pound mono, spool it up with that and just see if it fixes the issue before you pay to send it away. 1 Quote
Jared Kiley Posted October 22, 2019 Author Posted October 22, 2019 Its 20lb Suffix 832. If the line was digging into the spool, wouldnt I notice this on softer casts as well? Or are you thinking its digging in on the initial hard whip of the rod before the button is released? Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 That's definitely too thin of a line. Bump up to 40lb at least. I use 832 as well, and that's the smallest I can use on my casting reels with issues. It will happen intermittently, but a soft toss cast may not give you an issue as much. Bump up to 40 pound braid or 12 pound nylon/fluoro and see if it fixes your issue. Quote

CrankFate Posted October 22, 2019 Posted October 22, 2019 Had my Aldebaran locking up on me for no apparent reason while on vacation this summer. Charter boat guys were looking at me like a total novice. Eventually, I realized a few days later, I had a little knot that looked like a simple overhand knot about halfway through the spool that was getting caught on the levelwind every couple of casts. It was the darndest thing. Because I had no idea why it was happening. Quote

Tim Kelly Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 If the change of braid doesn't cure it for you, try throwing with a longer drop from your rod tip. I found that while you can cast very snatchily with centrefugal brakes and get away with it, magnetic brakes require less effort, but a smoother cast. The longer drop from the rod tip helps lengthen your power stroke to make it smoother. 1 Quote
