Want to upgrade my cranking rods to 7', one each for M and MH. I've looked at three brands:

St. Croix-210.00

AVC70MM 8-14#, 1/4-5/8 oz.

AVCMHM 10-20#, 3/8-1 oz.

Shimano Curado Crank-150.00-160.00

CDCC72M 8-15#, 5/16-1/2 oz.

CDCC74MH 10-20#, 1/4-3/4 oz.

GLoomis E6X Crank-190.00

843C CBR 8-14#, 1/4-5/8 oz.

845C CBR 10-25#, 3/8-1 oz.

Price range of all three is what I would be willing to pay or would ask for as a gift (Hey Santa!).

The St. Croix's and Shimano's have a Mod taper, while the Loomis's are MF. Don't know if this would make a difference?

Any ideas on doubling up applications with these rods?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

I have the ST Croix and Loomis, and would buy the SC's again. The E6X is OK, but there are better rods for the $$$$. While the GLX MBR is more expensive, it does a lot more and it's price may be justified. The can be had used for a reasonable price

If you are bass fishing and dont go under 3/8ths a custom on a pheonix x13 is amazing.  It's a wonderful casting rod and my last.  The handle on the production rod is to short for me and I throw a lot of 6 8 and 10xd cranks.  You really need two rods and a spinning setup for under 3/8ths works well.

I've got a St. Croix Avid and it's awesome. I actually have a Legend Glass too and it's always a tough decision on which one I take when I have to decide between the two on the kayak.

Thank you for your replies! Of the three brands mentioned in my original are there any options for deep cranking? Would like to stay in the same price range.

Would a H option be the way to go? And then have it do double duty for other applications?

Thanks Tom, I’ll check it out! Could save some dough with one rod, maybe get some baits to throw on it!

I have tried several over the years, some in the $400 range.  So far the best I have I used has the been the St. Croix Legend Glass.  I would buy one of each in the line up, if I had the cash.

If you want a M and a MH and you like St Croix, just get the 7' Premier series from Amazon and get free shipping, no need for the more sensitive Avids for cranks IMO.

Kittery Trading Post has the St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'4" Heavy/Big Cranker glass crankbait rod on sale for $89 shipped.

Not on your list but worth a look. I picked up two of these this Spring and love the actions. One I use for square bills(KVD 1.5) and medium cranks up to DT10's. The other is dedicated for Spook Jrs and Sammy 100 (excellent action for walking baits). Rods lure weight sweet spot is 3/8-1/2oz anything over feels like it's pushing it.

If you prefer glass rods instead of graphite, Tatula has some in lineup that are half off at Dicks right now but I have no personal experience with those.

I have the original version of this rod and I’ve been using it mostly for lipless crankbaits for past 3 years and I absolutely love this rod. I need to get a couple of them in the new version.

I own the 7' Premier Crankbait MH and it is a good rod for top water and shallow crank. The handle is too short for any cranks over 10' IMO. I also own the 7'4" Legend Glass and it is much more comfortable throwing cranks 10'-15', and even throw DT20s on it and it is pretty comfortable for long durations.

That being said, for next year I want to add the Legend Glass 7'2" M M, put 14lb Yozuri Hybrid on it, keep a squarebill tied on it but also use it for small top water. Then, use the 7'4" MH for mid cranks/Lipless with 12lb Fluro. Once I get the medium power I will get rid of the premier, because I then plan on throwing larger topwater on 7'6" MH-MF 40lb braid.

Thanks everyone for your input!

I ended up getting a Dobyns DC705CBMF.

Messing around with it, it looks like with the power and taper I’ll be able to throw light and heavier crank baits with it.

Since  the action descriptions are subjective you cannot tell the differences between the rods from the descriptions.  However, I believe if St Croix, Shimano, and Loomis are selling the rods as crankbait rods they will work very well for cranks.  They know what they are doing.

If you buy one and find it too moderate, use braid with it.  If it is too fast, use mono or FC.  I expect they will work fine with either, but line can change the system significantly, especially relative to fighting the fish.  Even a 5-6 foot mono/FC leader on braid offers a little forgiveness in the system.
