PanfishBass Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Looking at getting a new casting rod. Old one (Berkely lighting rod 7ft med/F 2 piece) broke in spring and I tried just using my spinning setups all summer and some of my favorite lures just didn't feel right, especially when I tried to use my new 130 WP on med/F spinning setup. I have a few rods I think I'd like but no way to actually test them and see if they fit my style, feel comfortable, or have the sensitivity that I'd like. Also I have the issue of being torn between 1 piece or a piece rod set up as I tend to go up to Michigan to fish when we visit the family and the only space I have for my rods is the cargo area of a Chevy equinox. I'm still trying out lures and trying to figure out my comfort lures so far I'm comfortable with whopper plopper style top water lures, deep diving crank baits, tokyo rig with a 7inch BPS curly tail worm in junebug color, 1/4oz blade bait. What I'm looking for: preferably <$100 (but I have at least 1 rod I'm interested in that's $140) Preferably 2 piece not sure how I feel about a travel rod (3 to 4 piece), I'm OK with a 1 piece but would like to avoid it if possible. Would like it to be MH/F but I'm open to better suggestions. I'm not sure what a good length should be, I'm thinking 6.6 to 7.3 just not sure though. So far I've narrowed my choices down to: 1 piece rods: Dobyns fury Lews speed stick or Tournament speed stick, can someone with experience with these two rods tell me the difference and not just what the marketing marterial says. Lews Mach rod or Mach 2 rod, again someone with hands on experience tell me what the difference is and is it worth it? *** fishing fate black gen 2 2 piece or travel rods: St croix mojo Bass *** fishing omen black Fenwick HMG travel (which comes with a med and a MH tip) Lastly as options Kastking perige II 2 piece ( either dual tip or single), Royal legend, Speed demon, speed demon pro, Resolute. Thoughts on these rods from hands on usage impressions and preferably compared to the ones above. Quote
Fishin' Fool Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 I'd get the St Croix mojo bass or the Dobyns Fury. I have both. I don't know that i have a favorite. They are both good rods for the price. 2 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 I have the Mojo Bass 7'1" MH/F (3/8-1 oz.). Best spinnerbait rod I've ever had, and I've got it in 2-pc. It has (just barely) enough give for deep divers, and it's fine on wake baits (what isn't?). It definitely is fast action, so you'll have to decide whether it'll work for you or not. jj Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 Ark rods look interesting, decent warranty in the $99 price point to add more confushion to your choices. Look into making a 4" dia PVC tube rod carrier attached to the vehicle roof rack. Tom 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 My pick would be the St. Croix Mojo. Nice rod for the money. Quote
PanfishBass Posted October 22, 2019 Author Posted October 22, 2019 Fishin' Fool, Jimmyjoe, and Fishtank, if the St. Croix was not on the list. Would any of you suggest any of the other 2 piece rods I have listed or maybe other rods on the market in the same price range. And have you had any experience with any of the the other rods on the list I have above, or any experience with Kastking rods? Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 PfB, You're asking alot of any MHF rated to 1oz throwing the WP130. You'd be better off throwing the WP75. Personally I didn't love the Mojo 7' 1" 2pc as an all arounder. It may be for some people. Everyone has a different feel. I tried the OMB 2 7'1" MHF 2pc and preferred it. Blasphemy, I know. I ended up with 2 more for travel and convenience. Plus I like a full cork handle. I've put them through the ringer. They've been shown no mercy. Not one problem and I've dragged out lots of good fish through pad fields and I've clipped lots of tree branches. I prefer the 7'3" MHF one pc a bit more. If I can only take one rod on a wade that's the one. I really like it, but it doesn't break down. TW is closing out the the OMB 2s for a decent price. Quote
PanfishBass Posted October 22, 2019 Author Posted October 22, 2019 PhishLi, Oh yeah I know the WP 130 is asking too much of most rods, I normally only through a WP 90. I only got the 130 as a gag and hope that just maybe I can catch a good sized fish when I'm up in Michigan next time, otherwise I try not to throw anything over 3/4 oz. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted October 22, 2019 Super User Posted October 22, 2019 The only 2-pc. casting rods with which I have any experience other than the Mojo rod are Berkley Heritage and Cabela rods. I would not recommend the Heritage, and the Cabela's rods are not the same anymore. I won't recommend something I don't know and haven't used, even as a short test of someone else's rods. That being said ..... if I had to gamble sight unseen, I might gamble on that Fenwick HMG travel rod. One other thing I might mention: theft. Out of sight, out of mind. Maybe that applies to you, and maybe it doesn't. Hope you find the rod you like. ? jj Quote

Nope based on the research that i did here before i bought the rod i knew I wanted to get the Fury or Mojo bass. Quote
