Had a blast using an old Johnson Silver Minnow this morning. I like using these this time of the year, but they'll catch fish throughout the year. I have memories of both my grandfather and father using these and it's good to see that they are still being made today. Anybody else use these old style spoons?

I do, I've caught a lot of fish on them over the years. I used to put an Uncle Josh pork chunk on it back when pork was still common. It was also the lure my dad tied on for me when I was 9-10 and learning how to throw a baitcaster. Wind has no effect on Silver Minnows!

I still use them. They work well over thick weeds

I don't know if a lure with a duller hook then the Johnson Silver Minnow.

My 1st bass lure was a Hawiian #3 weedless spoon, better hook and had a skirt and look nearly identicle.

Silver Minnow is still being made, hopefully with a sharpe hook, the Hawiian Wiggler is long gone.

Today I use Nemire Red Ripper weedless 1/2 oz spoon new old school lure.

We have a thread on the site with a few photos of Silver Minnows.

PS, UJ 3" white pork strips work perfect on the Silver Minnow, they were made for it.

still use em over grass flats,pads,eelgrass,etc. sharpen the hook, ad a trailer and your good to go.

Same use here on the Potomac grass beds with a Mister Twister grub.

I went into a tackle shop at the beach and asked them for artificials for redfish, trout and flounder. They gave me a gold Johnson Minnow and a pack of Gulp Mullet. They said I could spend all I wanted in that store but those two things would get it done for less than $10. I caught a flounder on each. No redfish or trout though. I've thought a lot about the Johnson minnow in our local lake, but only tried it once with no success.

Been using them for over 50+ years and they still catch fish. There are places here in south Louisiana with so much vegetation that the Silver Minnow is my first choice.

I used to fish the Silver Minnow with a Pork from or twister grub when younger, Now when I throw a weedless spoon, I use the Nemire Ripper weedless spoon which is similar but has a good hook on it as I believe it is marketed for Redfish and saltwater...I also have some old Bagley's hammered weedless spoons I use, they have a rattle and work well over weeds after throwing a frog, or when shad are just hatched or fish are busting bait in reeds etc...

 

There is a company around here that makes a "Baitholder" spoon which is kind of like a hybrid of the silver minnow and that finesse gliding jig VMC makes....It works well using it in open water with a small trick worm on it in ponds etc...Easy to fish...Spoons catch fish, no doubt about it...I get frustrated with too many missed fish on the Johnson spoon with the smaller hook and being dull, but It's a classic for a reason.

 

I used to have a Northland spoon I liked, I forget the name but Is a good weedless spoon which looks awesome and comes in nice patterns.

When I was younger someone told my friend and I these were amazing and weedless for a very weedy place we were fishing.  We threw on pork trailers and chucked them out and tried to retrieve them.  Nope, they just got all the muck and weeds so we stopped fishing them and thought people were stupid.  15 years later I figured out they were a topwater lure.  ?

And a weed guard like a leaf spring but certainly brings back memories of yesteryear......and the pork trailer.
