AStallings Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 Does anyone use a fish finder for small ponds, in a Jon Boat? We've got a pond in my neighborhood we've been fishing for years and always thought it would be cool to get a cheap fish finder to mount in our Alumacraft. This may be another option. Has anyone ever used one of these? Looks pretty cool as long as it's not a pos. Then again, I'm wondering if it might be a pain having to cast and recast every time you want to use it though. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1894549 Any suggestions on something in the $100-$150 range? Team_Dougherty Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 you would be better off with one of these http://store.humminbird.com/csonar-csonarBuddy.html Quote
done Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 I have the Eagle Cuda 168 on my 14' Jon. I have only took it out twice but for the price it works real well. Quote

How much did u pay for it? Those fishin buddy's are pretty cool how it's all one unit, although I wouldn't really mind having to mount one on the boat either. I've always been a big Garmin fan, and they have a couple models in my price range I was thinking about too. Guess I just need to wait till next time I'm around Bass Pro and go play with them first. You know you're in trouble when the bait monkey starts wanting electronics Quote
done Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 It was $79 at BP, but believe it or not Walmart had it for $69 near me. I put a deep cycle in my Jon, and run it off that along with a little Sevylor electric motor for trolling (that one was free from a friend of mine). Quote
Nick B Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 I use my Humminbird 565 that i have mounted on my "big" boat, that is mounted to my TM and put it on the TM of my jon. I use plugs for the power cords on each, and move the mount back and forth. I dont see the need to pay big bucks for a cheap unit when it cost me $10 to be able to transfer it between boats Quote

Nick B Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 Here are some pics you can see the plugs I use on both boats and the set up for the screen, its held on with velcro. I bought my jon about 3 weeks ago for 200, I had a TM and batts, so I bought a set of jumper cables for the TM batt, which sits in the back for weight distro, I put another batt in the middle of the boat for the fish finder. I spent less than 20 to get the boat ready for me. Quote
AStallings Posted September 11, 2008 Author Posted September 11, 2008 Mount and screen setup Thanks for the pics. That screen would last about 10 minutes if we mounted one there on our boat : . I've almost always got another person fishing with me and between the 2 of us, our tackle and rods we're stumbling around the whole time out there . I'm sure we'll figure something out, probably putting mine in the rear with the TM battery. That's a nice little setup you got for $200, can't beat that! Quote
farmpond1 Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 How small is the pond? IMHO, if it's less than an acre, there really isn't a great need for a fishfinder. (It's one of the things about a pond that's so nice-you don't have to do a lot of searching to find the fish or appropriate structure). And a cheap (i.e., "less sophisticated") fish finder won't tell you that much anyway. But if you have the money to spend, why not. Quote

It's definitely not a necessity to catch fish, we know the spots to fish from 10 years experience. I'd like to see exactly where the underwater structure is and what the bottom looks like. Quote
Nick B Posted September 11, 2008 Posted September 11, 2008 My boat is 14 ft and so far have only fished alone in it Quote
