Bandersnatch Posted October 13, 2019 Posted October 13, 2019 A good friend needs a recommendation on the best 6 inch whacky rigged senko rod for heavy grass. We're fishing in ten feet or less usually and I'm most likely recommending the nrx line up. The max fish size is also around 5lbs.He has the means and we both enjoy higher end gear but if something else makes sense for less thats great. I'd recommend the nrx 893c that I have but I just don't think it's super ideal for getting them turned quick and away from the thick heavy grass. It's easy to lose them as soon as they bury in the grass. I'm wondering what your guys thoughts are? Would the 873crr have enough tip to throw the light senko? I'm think the 894 certainly wouldn't. Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 13, 2019 Posted October 13, 2019 A 6” senko is not light by any means. Any MH or some H rods will cast them no problem. 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted October 13, 2019 Super User Posted October 13, 2019 I use a 7-6 bps Johnny Morris signature series heavy extra fast action with 50 Sufix 832 braid for that. Have no problem casting 5 inch weightless senko and it will turn any bass around. 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted October 13, 2019 Posted October 13, 2019 All I have ever used on the Potomac with Senkos is a MH 7' fast tip BPS Carbonlite and never a problem in the big, narly grass beds with a Senko. Many fish it on spinning rods on the Potomac. The Curado 200K I use has 15lb Invizx on it. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted October 14, 2019 Super User Posted October 14, 2019 I use a G. Loomis 844C IMX or GLX for this. Both have plenty of backbone to get the job done and will cast that heavy piece of plastic a country mile. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 14, 2019 Super User Posted October 14, 2019 I was looking jig rods today and ran across MegaBass 2019 Levante Perfect Pitch rod reviews and from the reports its "perfect". Tom 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted October 14, 2019 Super User Posted October 14, 2019 You should go with Conquest series rod 905C MBR. 1 Quote

Basseditor Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 I am a 6-inch Senko aficionado. I usually rig it T-rig, but I pitch into some knarly cover much like others use jigs. It’s surprising how well it pitches. I use two rods: 7-6 or 7-10 inch Kistler Zbone 5H! 20- and 25-pound flouro. I have super tuned Daiwa reels to make it easy to pitch. I haven’t tried wacky rig, but it should be fine. Plus, it casts very well with these set ups. 2 Quote

Because you and your friend like high end gear and with this conquest 7’6 XH you should have no problem pulling 5lbs bass out of any cover. And no I don’t have one if I have money like your I would buy all of the conquest series. Quote
Johnbt Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 I was going to suggest a Conquest 844c. That's the 7' heavy fast rod. I have one and it absolutely manhandled a 6# bass up and over six feet of thick weeds two weeks ago. It was my most recent rod purchase and this was my first good-sized fish on it. My buddy was driving my 1648 when it crashed the frog and he started spinning the boat around with the 70# Maxxum. Before he got us halfway turned around and headed over to dig it out of the milfoil/lilypad/mess I had the fish into clear water and halfway back to the boat. I've been fishing a 783c and an 843c for a year or two and landed quite a few similar fish without any drama, but the 844c was more like, "Come here. Now." And I wasn't really horsing it - much - because I was using 20# Yo-Zuri Hybrid. Think of it as finesse fishing with frogs. Okay, I keep saying frog, but it was an unweighted Sizmic Toad on a 3/0 hook. I love Conquest rods. Light, powerfully accurate, and strong. I have an 843s too. I've never tried any of the longer models. Short rods work better for what we normally do... sit and fish small ponds and electric-only lakes. We're old. Retired and lazy anyway. I keep looking at new bass boats, and buying nice rods and reels instead. But there's a new Vexus dealer about 15 from the house. 1 Quote
KP Duty Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 I'll never disagree with an 844 loomis recommendation. I use the 844 for beavers on a 3/16oz head on up to frogs. I do see that the conquest 844 doesnt have the usual 1/4-1oz rating of the glx/imx, but instead shows a 3/8-1oz rating. 1 Quote
tim_kovar Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 I'd recommend nrx 873 as my first choice for the cover you mention, conquest 844 as a second, and then megabass Orochi xx perfect pitch as a good third option. I think the 873 would throw 6" senkos just fine, they are a pretty heavy peice of plastic. I don't think the 893 you mentioned would have enough power in heavy cover to get them out of the over. 1 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted October 14, 2019 Super User Posted October 14, 2019 This thread is thicker then the cover. When the rods and reels cost more then boat you know where it's going. Tom 1 2 Quote

GLX 844C MBR, GLX/NRX 854C JWR, or NRX 873C CRR would all be phenomenal. 13 hours ago, WRB said: I was looking jig rods today and ran across MegaBass 2019 Levante Perfect Pitch rod reviews and from the reports its "perfect". Johnbt Posted October 14, 2019 Posted October 14, 2019 "When the rods and reels cost more then boat you know where it's going." I know that if I hadn't gotten married last November to a widow with a son with a wife and 2 little grandsons I probably would have bought a new Allison locally. Now there's a Vexus dealer, and a marina on James River a mile down the road. I'm 69 now and probably don't need another boat. But she has a 3-car garage...We have a 3-car garage and I have a 103-year-old house to sell in a historic district. It's been paid off since 1997 and I suspect someone is going to spend the proceeds. I hope to get a little of it. A nice boat and a year or two of slip fees would be good. It's just money. Right? 2 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 14, 2019 Super User Posted October 14, 2019 Health to do what you enjoy is far more important then money spent on toys. If you have the skills to use the toys go for it, otherwise it's a waste of money as knowone knows what is in their future. Tom 1 Quote

Tom Jan 20 is next year as I said... Plus, 6 inch senkos are a big bait and if fishing around cover or structure you'll want the power of a 844, 854, 873. The TV and Perfect Pitch are a good value choice though Quote

Of my 3, 7’6” two are the older LE models and one is the 2019 build. I only have one Helium 3, but it’s 3-4 years old. It looks good to me. Between my adult son and I, we have about 100 Kistlers. I have one 7’11” XH, but I rarely use it. It’s no longer a standard model. 1 Quote

I appreciate that, don't get me wrong my 7'1 MH H3 with an aldebaran on it is one of my favorite things to throw. It'll handle a lot and weighs nothing. Honestly I think I don't use it enough because it feels like a light cover rod due to its weight. 1 Quote
