I haven't flown with a travel rod in years.  Are any travel rods still allowed as a carry on?  I've checked and have heard different experiences.  I'm going on a golf vacation and would like to bring a decent travel rod that optimally I could take on the plane with me as a carry on.  Looking at the Fenwick 4 piece.

I fly Jet Blue. They allow my Akuma and Diawa travel rods as carry ons.  They’re both in short, semi-soft cases.

Any tackle/hooks bigger than a trout hook need to be checked baggage, according to TSA rules.

Flew Delta last Jan and their policy in the passenger compartment was unchanged from previous years and allowed a carry-on bag and a personal item.  I had a back-pack and my travel rod case and no problem.  The case was for 4 piece 9 foot rods, I think 30 inches long.

I suggest carrying in the carry-on bag your reels and enough tackle to at least start your fishing trip if your checked bag gets delayed.  I have carried my reels,  flies and leaders but no tools, and have had no problems.  Nail clippers are now allowed, so it would be a good idea to have on so you can cut line.  In some areas fishing tackle is very hard to get and theft could be a problem, so I like to have as much that is allowable in my carry-on.

I flew American to FL back in Feb with my Daiwa Ardito travel rod as a carry on. No issues. TSA did have to remove all my tackle to check it, which was annoying.

Travel rods in case to 32" no issues. I also carry a reel or two. I have had and seen folks denied for hooks and braid in the past. Before 9-11 we used to bring wire, hooks, and tools onboard, and tie rigs on the way down to destinations, simpler times.

No problems at all including 3 trips to Mexico on commercial air.

Just check with the airline On this first. For example, Alaska Airlines, a local carrier in the pacific nw, will allow you to take your 2-piece 6’6” rod as a carry on item to Mexico. However the converse was not true for me. Check in luggage only coming back stateside.

Good news was that I had a sister-in-law to give it to because it was too late to put it in checked luggage. Bad news was it got lost anyway in her house and I never saw my 2-piece Shimano casting rod ever again.

To the OP:

Regardless Of what we say, it would behoove you to personally check with the airline you choose for both to and from.

I agree and disagree.  There would be no surprises if you checked with the airline, however, they will follow the letter of the law if asked.  Times I have just brought things in carry-on and it skated through TSA.  Another time (with the same bag of tackle) I asked ahead of time and ended up having to toss my pliers.  The rest of the tackle was deemed ok - had I not said anything might have been able to keep everything.  Never know..

Thanks for the responses.  I checked with the airlines but I do know people who have had different experiences a year or so ago.  I had to check my rods years ago and just kept doing it since, and always forget to ask the ticket and boarding agents.  Just trying to prevent being that guy with oversized golf bag and rod tubes fumbling through the airport.

Yup.  Same thing happened to me.  Brand new set of nice needle nose pliers had to be left behind.  What upsets me is they won't keep items stored somewhere so passengers can pick them up on their way back home.  Wonder who benefits from all the items that passengers are required to leave behind.

Never carried a rod.  Don't think the couple 2-piece rods I have would break down into a short enough tube for carry on.  I do take about 7-8 reels with me in my carry on.  Don't trust putting them in the checked luggage.  Rods stay stored at a brother-in-law's.  I am glad for that.  Shipping them back and forth would be prohibitive.

Agree... I now have a rod stored permanently at my In-Laws in Florida and another at my daughter’s apt in Denver.  I just travel with a couple reels and a small tackle bag (with shorter pliers in them now ;)
