The current movement in the sport, no doubt has raised lots of questions and opinions. Based on opinion differences, I am seeing lots of discussions that are turning into arguments which go nowhere.... to each his own, and only time will tell. For health reasons, and age, my days are over, so I'm just a fan. Rather than participating in arguments of which is best, and what is going to happen in the future, I am wondering how this affects the teaching of the sport. Although there are many parallels, there are  distinctly different goals at the tournament level.

I really don't understand why people have to get all emotional over it and argue with each other.  It's fishing folks.  It's supposed to be fun.  If instead your blood starts to boil over a conversation about fishing, then perhaps fishing may not be your thing.

My thoughts exactly. How does this affect the federation/club level fisherman? Right now in my area/state both FLW and BASS leave a lot to be desired for us club fishermen with little support to grow. My club was FLW/TBF for years, switching to BASS last year. We are giving it one more year in BASS then we will decide if we want to be an affiliated club at all. Looking forward to hearing what you and others think. Hope it stays respectful and civil.

Methinks the hard feelings all arise when money is involved. Which is why i dont fish tournaments and got burned out guiding full time in '08. Well that and fast boats scare the crap out of me.....

My club has been in existence since 1938 - long before B.A.S.S. was around.  It's never been affiliated with anyone, and has no plans to be affiliated with anyone either - especially now.

My advice - go independent.  It can be done.  We've been doing it for over 80 years!

Very cool! Is your club bass specific? I know some non affiliated clubs are multi species. I, and some others would be fine going independent. Others will not. Not going to make everyone happy, and as stated my the op, different goals across the board.

@Jim- Indiana I know exactly what you’re saying.  I think MLF/BPT has created a much more enjoyable format for the average spectator.  The competition plays out over hours not days.  The anglers fish more like the average angler fishes because most anglers fish for numbers more than for size.  There’s also more action to keep your attention.  That’s why it’s been so successful.

I’ve been very critical of the new format because I don’t think it’s a good test of what I consider to be real fishing skills.  Maybe I’m just old fashion.  The good news is,  as the sport becomes more of a numbers game and the next generation focuses more on numbers, there will be more big fish for us old guys.

Does your club have their own liability insurance on events that you host?  In my opinion that is the only reason to be affiliated with BASS or FLW clubs...they do offer some coverage on events in case of a worse scenario happening during your club event.

Yes, they do. But there's also an indemnity clause for voluntarily participating in their events too. So that keeps insurance rates down.

The thing that separates BASS from MLF for me, and perhaps a topic where there might be stronger disagreement, is that I belief the MLF format and rules (pre FLW acquisition) is more respectful of the fish and the fishery.  Just my opinion.

I agree. I like that the fish go right back!

Will the commercials during the BPT events and MLF events still bash on livewell tournaments since the owners of MLF/BPT are now in charge of FLW and are going to be using livewell tournaments? LOL

Seems as though that was their "selling point" to some people when they started MLF.

MLF is now the biggest livewell tour/organization in the world...What a shocking turn of events given the all the livewell talk earlier this year!

I do like the new FLW stuff, assuming it all remains as proposed.  Looks like they finally realized that most tournament anglers prefer the traditional format, smart move.

I like that it establishes a qualifying aspect to getting into and remaining on the BPT.

Here's the bottom 15 from MLF this year

This looks great to me, a true grass-roots all the way to the Major Leagues.  Nice to see the increase in the Costa Series (AA Ball) to 8 divisions instead of 5.

A lot of options for pros next year, competition is good in the end!

Wow that is a old bass club!

lived in the Seattle area from '69-'70 and thought I was the only bass angler in Washington, never ran into another bass angler, everyone up there called bass trash fish.

Interesting!

I don't know of any SoCal bass clubs with B.A.S.S. Affiliation although several have the name Bassmasters in the club name.

Played this game on many levels for a long time and now to just sit back and watch the developments is head moving.  People are sooooo critical of everyone....gotta be me me me my my my way.  Your fish isn't long enough for TV.....your fish is too big....they wear the wrong shirts...oh...you shake when you fish...you don't drink coffee or carry a banana in the boat....how come they pay you...what you doin here!!!!   What a funny looking boat...on and on and on.

Still love the sport.....love

Probably won't be long before they have to wear helmets, finger protectors, have a sport drink on the belt, larger windshield to protect from flying objects,  four to a boat.....and on.

Sorry.....it's early....only on second cup

Thank you Lord I still Love your gifts.

I'll probably never make it to a weigh in at a bass tournament, so for me it is who has the best TV coverage and the most action, big fish or little fish, I don't care.  This thread started out with a question regarding the teaching of the sport.  Many new anglers are speeding their learning of the sport watching videos and TV, and participating in forums like BR.  When they can spend time on the water they are better prepared.  Those who are learning from their parents and mentors who take them fishing at an early age have an advantage, which is as it should be.

I think the biggest thing MLF did was figure out how to keep score realtime in a tournament and encourage guys to catch fish the entire time.  They've made it a TV friendly tournament, vs watching live, then waiting a few hours for a weigh in to see who won.
