Joe_w1234 Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Hello I’ve heard some great things about swing head jigs, and I want to maybe try this technique out. I heard that you fish one like a crank bait, but this doesn’t seem right to me. My mind says they should be fished like a shakey head or something slow on the bottom. Also, does anyone have a favorite creature bait to put on the end? I’m thinking about a sk rage bug. And what size jig head? Thanks in advance for the help 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted October 3, 2019 Super User Posted October 3, 2019 Rage Bug.... reg and/or magnum. I've used Siebert's, Strike King, Biffleheads and generic (Janns and/or Barlow....not sure.) All work - but, for no reason I've totally figured out, the Biffleheads come through junk better. I generally use 3/8 and 1/2. I typically drag along bottom, but you can swim them just fine, too. Quote
GreenGhostMan Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 I use Bass Patrol deflection jigs. Tackle warehouse has them. 3/8 and 1/2 oz mostly like the above poster. I usually only fish them on hard or rock bottom. Reeling just fast enough to tick the bottom. I typically use SK rage bugs and other beaver style baits, but you could probably use any soft plastic and get bites. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted October 3, 2019 Super User Posted October 3, 2019 I make my own. I use from 1/4 to 1/2 oz with 2/0 to 5/0 hooks depending upon the bait. Brush hogs, baby brush hogs and paca craws have worked best for me. I have to hop or drag it to get bites. Swimming like Tommy B. gets me nowhere. Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 Are you talking a swing jig head for bottom contact or a swing swim jig head like these...https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/catpage-FREEHJ.html?from=basres Quote

Thanks in advance for the help My personal affection /addiction for fishing swing heads runs deep. My standard presentation is a stop & go deal either directly on or just off the bottom. Rage Bug & a mid-sized swimbait are my two go-to trailers. Rig has accounted for a large percentage of the brown bass in the Frabil last few seasons. Some additional info here A-Jay 4 Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted October 3, 2019 Posted October 3, 2019 I've had some success fishing them just off bottom with a medium paced "crankbait" retrieve. I really like the bait that was intended for them, the Gene Larew Biffle Bug. I think this is a rig that cannot be fished the wrong way, as long as you don't crank it in at a breakneck speed. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 3, 2019 Super User Posted October 3, 2019 Not many anglers get a lure named after them, Tommy Biffle is one of them. The Biffle bug is a swing head jig with a Biffle bug trailer, he is the man who popularized this jig. Watch Tommy Biffle videos on how to fish them. Tom 2 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 3, 2019 Super User Posted October 3, 2019 I use it like a crankbait but not fast. I make my own and have found that a small 1/8oz works well when I swim it using a small swimbait like a Keitech 3.8 as the trailer. Most of the time I use 1/2oz with a sweet beaver trailer and I reel fast enough to maintain bottom contact. Bites are different that you'd expect, I've had maybe a dozen bites over the last few years that I've felt, most of the time I'm reeling and the rod begins to load up and I just lean back to drive the hook all the way in. Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 4, 2019 Global Moderator Posted October 4, 2019 I use them a lot, I make my own. The 1/4oz is the size I use the most by far and I drag it instead of using a steady retrieve. Quote
